Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The need for reliable energy sources to meet the growing demand in the US requires a better understanding of materials aging mechanisms (e.g., irradiation and chemical reactions) associated with the long-term operation of nuclear concrete structures in commercial light water power reactors. The Fusion Materials for Nuclear Systems Division within the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a staff research scientist to conduct experimental projects, develop new research areas and technical concepts in support of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program. The R&D staff member will perform microstructural characterization and conduct tests to determine physical and chemical degradation of cementitious materials following different exposure conditions to provide fundamental analysis of the modes of degradation towards support of aging management of concrete and concrete structures.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
-Conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in the field of experimental research applied to concrete and other heterogeneous materials -Responsible for independently solving technical problems with limited supervisory oversight for research and development projects supported by the LWRS Program -Follow set guidelines to meet quality assurance standards, through documenting work and developing procedures. -Co-author and eventually lead the development of research proposals to varied funding agencies.-Present and report research results in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, program reviews, and represent the program in joint technical committee meetings with industry and regulators
