The Nuclear Science & Isotope Technology Division, Nonproliferation Technology Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct nuclear fuel cycle project work, expand current research activities, and support future development of project initiatives in the Nuclear Materials Management area.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: The selected candidate will perform a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in the areas of fuel cycle systems analyses, nuclear security, nonproliferation, and radiation detection. Responsibilities may include:Lead and manage large technical projects Develop R&D proposals for planning, conducting, coordinating, and reporting R&D activities Conduct analysis and experimental work on plutonium securityConduct work related to materials attractivenessConduct general engineering analyses of the overall nuclear fuel cycleDevelop flow sheets including design, dynamic modeling, setup and testing of systems Implement work based on developed flow sheets Lead multi-lab scale collaborations on projects such as nuclear materials processingDesign and develop research plans to address specific problemsPlan experiments including risk identification and mitigation to address problemsDevelop standard operating procedures in compliance with ORNLs Standards Based Management SystemMaintain records including laboratory notebooks, reports, spreadsheets, etc.Network and develop collaborative R&D internally and with specific sponsorsPrepare and present research results to sponsors and others
A Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or chemical engineering is required. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance, an SCI clearance, and may be subject to HRP requirements as well. Radiological Worker and Respirator training may be required. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peers and others are required. The demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets is required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership are required. Basic MS Office skills are required. Familiarity with Python, C++, Java script, AnyLogic or similar dynamic simulation software, MCNP or similar Monte-Carlo transport codes, SCALE, PrimaVera Project Management, OpenText, MS Access, and SQL is highly desirable and should be highlighted by the successful candidate.Applicants cannot have received their PhD more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length is 12 months with the potential for one one-year extension.
