Research Scientist in Geographic Information Science / NB50651968
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Geographic Information Science and Technology Group (GIST) at ORNL is seeking qualified candidates to participate in exciting, cutting edge research to advance spatiotemporal population modeling, geospatial computing, and volunteered geographic information (VGI) exploration. As high resolution, spatiotemporally explicit population estimates become increasingly critical for understanding energy use, human health and security, and urban sustainability, GIST distinguishes itself by meeting the challenge of scaling applications to the entire planet. Successful candidates will have a unique and exciting opportunity to work as part of a team that develops data fusion algorithms for highly resolved mapping of human population, and see their own successful ideas executed at unprecedented scale. Additionally, candidates will have the opportunity to publish their work, attend conferences, mentor students, interact with universities and other laboratories as they build a highly visible career on the scientific and computing capabilities and prestige at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The function of this position is to establish and conduct research within the field of geographic information science, with special emphasis on spatiotemporal population distribution modeling and analysis that is directly applicable to current national security, environmental, and other geospatial research issues. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Developing geospatial modeling approaches for small and large scale population distribution and characterization.
  • Conceiving, designing, and implementing innovative research methods involving applications programming and geospatial analysis using desktop and internet-based mapping technologies.
  • Scientific and technical leadership of algorithm development and modeling initiatives utilizing integration and conversion of distributed databases, geospatial technologies, and knowledge discovery exploitation of VGI.
  • Development of data processing tools to include data fusion approaches.
  • Publication and presentation of research in professional journals and to the scientific community. In addition to conceptualizing, designing, and developing new methodologies and applications, the position will require working effectively in multidisciplinary teams to carry out these projects. Tasks include development of algorithms and models, optimization of existing algorithms, and computational and statistical analysis of geospatial data acquired from nationwide and international population, location, and infrastructure databases. Results from the basic research and the application to real-world problems will be published in professional journals and presented to the scientific community. This position will interact and coordinate with national experts and professional organizations in the GIS field to keep ORNL on the forefront of the geospatial sciences. Frequent interaction with customers is a part of the work effort. The successful candidates will have the following education, experience, and skills:

    Qualifications Required:
Advanced degree (M.S. or higher) in geographical sciences, computer and information sciences, or computer engineering or related area. 2+ years of professional experience and training beyond graduate level with a demonstrated knowledge and implementation of dasymetric mapping techniques and spatial data fusion. Extensive knowledge and experience with collection, curation, and data fusion using geospatially enabled social media data and other VGI. Extensive experience with commercial and free GIS software (ESRI products, free GIS software libraries) and database technologies. Experience developing geospatial tools and models using the Python programming language. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy, which requires US Citizenship. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomlyselected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test resultPreferred Qualifications: Strong background in GIS principles and analytical techniques, GIS science theory and application, computational methods and adaptive spatial algorithms. Also requires broad skills in the analysis, display, and interpretation of various scientific and geospatial data. Experience with small area estimation techniques, demographic modeling, and knowledge of ethnographic patterns and relationships. Proven skills in using R for statistical analysis and visualization. Experience building and managing relational and spatial databases. Excellent communication (oral and writing), strategic planning, organization, leadership, and decision-making skills. Strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a team member are essential. Knowledge of remote sensing and image classification techniques, and use of high resolution imagery in spatial analysis. Experience developing, managing, and consuming RESTful, WFS, and WCS services.
