Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to focus on polymer additive manufacturing and composites processing, with a particular emphasis on rheology studies of thermoplastic and reactive chemistries. As a postdoc, you will conduct research in the area of additive manufacturing related to advancement of current technologies, implementation of new processes, and development of unique material systems. You'll also be part of a multidisciplinary team that with have you collaborating with other researchers and technical staff in the modeling, production, and characterization of these materials. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). OVERVIEW: Our team carries out high quality R&D focused on the processing of metal and ceramic materials for both structural and functional applications. We have a long history in the processing of refractory metal and other high-temperature structural materials, including intermetallic and ceramic materials. Our work has played meaningful roles in applications from steel mills, foundries, and electric power transmission lines, to light-weight automobiles and spacecraft power systems. You will be among team members based at the MDF, the Department of Energys (DOE) first facility established to provide affordable and convenient access to R&D expertise, facilities, and tools to facilitate rapid adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies (including additive manufacturing of alloys and composites) to improve the competitiveness of the U.S. workforce. The MDF is designed to reduce technical risk and support the business case for private investment in new production technologies that will reduce life-cycle energy and greenhouse gas emissions, lower production cost, and build new products and job opportunities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Utilize Polymer Engineering and Polymer Chemistry for a wide variety of manufacturing technologies Characterize rheology of thermoplastic and reactive materials for additive manufacturing Develop new material solutions for polymer additive manufacturing techniques Advance materials research and explore new materials for composites processes Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required:
A PhD degree in Polymer Engineering or a related discipline completed within the last five years A record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference presentationsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with rheology measurements and analysis of fiber reinforced injection molded samples Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international, scientific audience Motivated and safety conscious Ability to set priorities, multi-task, and adapt to ever-changing needs with the proven ability to function well and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative, team environmentOTHER INFORMATION:Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
