Purpose:
As an R&D Associate, you will focus on the synthesis and physical properties of lithium solid electrolytes using advanced processing characterization tools to study and optimize the processing and probe the structure and interfaces. This position resides in the Physical Chemistry of Materials Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). OVERVIEW: The Physical Chemistry of Materials Group is a highly collaborative team of material scientists, physical chemists, electrochemists and engineers working to advance functional materials for energy storage, conversion, separations, and catalysts. Our work spans basic to applied research as funded by a variety of sponsors. One of our signature capabilities is materials and processing to provide solid electrolytes capable of protecting and utilizing a lithium metal anode. To these programs, we bring a variety of materials, structures and processing routes, as well as characterization using ORNLs capabilities for in-situ microscopy and neutron investigations. You will be encouraged to collaborate with researchers in other groups across the laboratory and take full advantage of ORNL's user facilities.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Contribute to existing programs on solid electrolytes with emphasis on probing fundamental properties and mechanisms of relevant interfaces and bulk materials, developing new compositions and processing methods Provide leadership for solid state battery development Develop a signature expertise in one or more advanced materials characterizations and provide this expertise through group and broader collaborations Contribute or lead development of proposals and new program directions for electrochemical energy storage devices and materials Present and report research results, and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications: A Ph.D. in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related discipline At least two years of experience with solid state, ionically functional materialsPreferred Qualifications: Experience with directing a research program and preparing progress reports Skills in advanced characterization of a materials structure, physical and mechanical properties Skills in basic synthesis and processing of ceramic and/or polymer materials Clear evidence of motivation to achieve creative innovations in materials or energy devices An excellent record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals Experience in establishing/maintaining collaborations; conceiving and developing proposals. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience Motivated and safety conscious Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever-changing needs with the proven ability to function well in a dynamic research environment Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines OTHER INFORMATION:Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.
