Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC) within the Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) is responsible for the safe and compliant operation of Building 7920 and Building 7930. Both buildings are Category 2 Nuclear Facilities. NNFDs main responsibility is to ensure that the facilities remain operationally available for research activities which are conducted primarily within heavily shielded hot cells and caves using remote manipulators for highly irradiated materials and glove box labs for materials which can be contact-handled. The Shift Supervisor position is manned 24 hours per day/7 days per week and is the point-of-contact for operations, research, and maintenance work coordination within the facility.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Directly supervises the on-shift hot cell technicians to safely and successfully perform chemical operations within the hot cell including dissolution, separation, purification, recovery, and preparation of radioisotopes.Maintains awareness and compliance with all SAR/TSR requirements through completion of facility rounds, awareness of control room alarms and associated responses, and awareness of activities within the facility which could affect SAR/TSR limits.Has developed expertise with remote manipulator use and specialized hot cell processing equipment.Reviews and approves all documentation prepared and completed by technicians being supervised on shift. Maintains clear and accurate documentation (check sheets, data sheets, logs, forms) for any work done. Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with DOE Order 5480.19, Conduct of Operations Requirements for DOE Facilities.Maintains qualification and training as a REDC Shift Supervisor through prior qualification as a REDC Shift Technicians and in accordance with DOE Order 5480.20A, Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities.Provides support to research and development, testing, and field application of equipment and research and development of processes for combining/separating chemicals, compounds, and related products and materials using principles and technology of chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering and related sciences.Builds, modifies, repairs, operates and maintains a wide variety of laboratory and facility processing equipment as well as performing laboratory-scale, bench-scale, hot-cell, and pilot-scale experiments to support radiochemical process research and development.Identifies potential problems, recognizes unexpected results, and troubleshoots some of the more complex operational problems.Keeps work areas in a safe, clear, and orderly condition. Performs other related duties as assigned by the REDC managers/supervisors.Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Qualifications Required:
Bachelors degree in a technical field with a minimum of five years relevant nuclear operations experience, or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience. Applicants should be qualified as a Nuclear Operations Technician through the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, or have equivalent non-reactor nuclear hot cell facility experience with chemical processing. This position also requires Rad Worker II training (trained in-house after hire in). This position is structured on a 12-hour rotating shift work schedule in a non-reactor nuclear facility. Some overtime may be required.This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.Equal Opportunity Employer.
