Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Purpose:
The Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC) within the Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) is responsible for the safe and compliant operation of Building 7920 and Building 7930. Both buildings are Category 2 Nuclear Facilities. NNFDs main responsibility is to ensure that the facilities remain operationally available for research activities which are conducted primarily within heavily shielded hot cells and caves using remote manipulators for highly irradiated materials and glove box labs for materials which can be contact-handled. Under supervision, the Nuclear Operations Technician provides technical support in nuclear and radiochemical processing operations for REDC and NNFD.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Performs processing operations including dissolution, separation, purification, recovery, and preparation of radioisotopes.
  • Provides support to research and development, testing, and field application of equipment and research and development of processes for combining/separating chemicals, compounds, and related products and materials using principles and technology of chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering and related sciences.
  • Builds, modifies, repairs, operates and maintains a wide variety of laboratory and facility processing equipment as well as performing laboratory-scale, bench-scale, hot-cell, and pilot-scale experiments to support radiochemical process research and development.
  • Assists REDC supervision in completing the assigned tasks and responsibilities designated.
  • Assists in identifying potential problems, recognizing unexpected results, and troubleshooting some of the more complex operational problems.
  • Obtains qualification as a REDC Operations Technician in accordance with DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Facilities.
  • Once qualified, progresses to the initial qualification of REDC Supervisor in order to maintain responsibility for the facility in the absence of the assigned Shift Supervisor.
  • Uses remote manipulators and specialized hot cell processing equipment.
  • Prepares clear and accurate documentation (check sheets, data sheets, logs, forms) for any work done.
  • Keeps work areas in a safe, clear, and orderly condition.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the REDC managers/supervisors.
  • Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.


    Qualifications Required:
    Associate of Science Degree in a technical field with two to seven years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related technical field. Prior work experience in a nuclear facility or experience in the Naval Nuclear Power Program is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work safely in accordance with ES&H standards and procedures required. Ability to perform tedious tasks requiring extensive manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination required. This position requires 12-hour rotating shift schedule in a nonreactor nuclear facility. This position also requires Rad Worker II training (trained in-house after hire.) This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.Equal Opportunity Employer
