Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Purpose:
The Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a research staff member to participate in theory and simulation research and development work in support of ongoing science and technology research for the U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Program in the Office of Science.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
This position requires the conceptualization and performance of modeling research and development in the area of energetic particle physics in tokamaks, with an emphasis on runaway electrons and wave-particle interactions. Significant experience developing kinetic fast particle simulations is required, and experience with the KORC (Kinetic Orbit Runaway electron Code) code is desired. The candidate will be responsible for the development of new energetic particle simulation capabilities, and application of this and other existing simulations to understand experimental measurements including dynamics following tokamaks disruptions. Of particular interest is the development of an integrating modeling capability for the predictive simulation of generation of runaway electrons and their mitigation and dissipation using impurities. Collaboration with other physicists and computer scientists will be a regular function of the position. The position also requires interacting with the experimental plasma physics and plasma technology teams at ORNL to coordinate model validation efforts. The candidate will be expected to fully document work in technical reports and publications, effectively interface with project management and sponsors, and participate in the identification and development of research proposals.

Qualifications Required:
The position requires a Ph.D. in Physics or Nuclear Engineering with post-doctoral experience in an R&D environment. Experience in the development and use of high-performance computing applications is required. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, and collaborators. Candidate must be a self-starter and able to work independently or in a team. Desired Qualifications: A minimum of five years of experience in energetic particle physics is highly desired. Experience with theoretical plasma transport and equilibrium physics is preferred. Preferred Skills: Proficiency in using Fortran, C++, IPS, KORC, is preferred, as well as experience in the development of codes that take advantage of emerging computer architectures.
