Purpose:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support our Carbon and Composites Group. In this role, you will focus on synthesis and processing science of composite materials as well composite performance and multifunctional materials, work alongside our team of dedicated researchers, and have the opportunity to share your results with the scientific community. As a postdoc, you will conduct experimental research around polymer-based composite materials and polymer dynamics, chemical modification of polymer resins, and fibrillar materials with additional work on new composite processing. This position resides within the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). OVERVIEW: Our research team carriesout high quality R&D focused on the strategic composite material needs of the aerospace, automotive, and marine/shipbuilding industries as well as trending areas of international composite research in material science, mechanical and chemical engineering, and automation. Of special interest to our group is the reclaiming of carbon fiber and its reuse in high speed, high volume composite fabrication processes. You will help us lead and support research for novel manufacturing methods for high volume composite materials; conduct chemical characterization and modification experiments of fiber reinforced polymers; publish original peer reviewed research articles; and oversee student projects.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Utilize polymer and composite engineering as well as chemistry for a wide variety of manufacturing technologies, such as extrusion, injection molding, resin transfer molding, compression molding and blow molding Design of polymer composites structures, development and testing of new materials Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Qualifications Required:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline completed within the last five years Experience with polymer chemistry, composites, and/or polymer processing PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with analytical characterization techniques such as Differential Scanning Calorimentry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), electron microscopes and Rheology Experience with chemical characterizations is plus such as gel permeationchromatography (GPC), X-Ray photoelectron scetroscopy (XPS) Experience with surface modification and chemical treatment of glass and carbon fibrillar materials and with common polymer resin chemistries Experience with compounding, fabricating, and characterizing polymer composites An excellent record of productive and creative research as proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience Self starter, capable of creative research with minimal supervision and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues Ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needsOTHER INFORMATION:Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must completeall degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
