Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Purpose:
The Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) within the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position in the area of research and development for advanced fuel clad coatings, with the primary focus on silicon carbide composite-based enhanced accident-tolerance light water reactor fuel cladding.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Conduct studies on processing and evaluation of hermetic, environmental barrier coatings on silicon carbide composite-based enhanced accident-tolerance fuel cladding primarily for light water reactor applications Coordinate and conduct microstructural and mechanical properties examinations with coated silicon carbide test specimens following neutron irradiation Work with other team members to maintain a high level of scientific productivity Present and report research results and publish scientific resultsin peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications: PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years Background in the processing and/or characterization of materials for nuclear reactor applicationsPreferred Qualifications: Familiarity with chromium-based coating materials and techniques, thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrothermal corrosion, radiation-induced microstructural and property changes in nuclear materials, and nuclear reactor engineering is highly desired. Flexibility to adapt evolving research scope and programmatic needs Strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals Motivated and safety conscious and possess excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills Ability to work on multiple tasks and to independently set priorities to meet deadlinesOTHER INFORMATION:The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Work Directions and Interfaces:
Position reports to the Team Leader, Advanced Nuclear Materials, within Nuclear Materials Science and Technology Group. Interfaces with technical staff, industry and academic partners, and managers at ORNL.
