Purpose:
The Thermal-Hydraulics and Irradiation Engineering (TH&IE) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks applications for an applied research and development (R&D) staff position, with emphasis in the area of irradiation engineering. A central mission of the TH&IE Group is to develop advanced materials irradiation experimental capsules to support characterization of fluence-resistant structural materials and improved nuclear fuel for customers within the US Department of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Defense, and other government and private organizations. The TH&IE Group provides an important combination of advanced analytical analysis, experiment development, and hands-on fabrication skills. The primary function of this position is to conceptualize and develop experiments for the purpose of irradiating advanced structural materials and fuels. This includes experiment thermal, structural, and neutronic design, management of fabrication and irradiation steps, and to provide hands-on support of the experiment assembly process.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will perform the research needed to develop experiments that test advanced structural materials and fuels in a nuclear environment and will support the design, fabrication, and irradiation of those experiments. Specific tasks include performing thermal and structural analyses using commercial software such as ANSYS, providing safety analysis to ensure safe experiment operation, calculating nuclear heating rates using codes such as MCNP, SCALE, etc., overseeing the production of design drawings and procedures, managing and assisting in the fabrication of experiments, and tracking experiments as they are irradiated. This position requires analytical, design, and managerial skills to successfully complete assigned projects. The selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with staff members inside and outside the TH&IE Group and working on projects in a team environment. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently, lead or perform detailed thermal/structural and neutronic analysis, fully document work performed, and effectively interface with project sponsors.


Qualifications Required:
Candidates must hold a PhD degree in nuclear engineering with two years of experience in a postdoctoral appointment. The candidate must have demonstrated problem-solving skills and a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors. Desired Experience: Three years of relevant experience and a demonstrated aptitude in the application and/or development of thermal design methods, nuclear analysis, and experimental techniques. It is highly desirable for the candidate to have experience using finite element (e.g., ANSYS) or finite difference methods and software for solving thermal/structural problems, along with a background in thermal-hydraulics methods. Experience using neutronics codes such as MCNP and the SCALE code system for analysis of irradiation experiments. Experience with managing projects in a nuclear reactor environment is highly desirable. Additionally, this position requires that the candidate work with other members of the TH&IE group to develop new programs, write proposals, estimate costs, and pursue new funding opportunities. Clearance Requirements: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance. This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing.
