Job Summary
This position requires the ability to interpret local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations as they relate to the Company's Defense business unit. Identify and implement applicable regulatory and program requirements in order to ensure that the Company’s activities are, at a minimum, conducted in compliance with the applicable environmental laws and regulations in a continuously improving manner. Work with and communicate effectively with the Company's various departments on the above.
Major Areas of Accountability
1. Manage projects related, but not limited to: air permitting and compliance, wastewater treatment, storm water management, hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, community right-to-know reporting, and other environmental regulations related to Oshkosh Defense’s various facilities and as assigned by the Corporate Director of Global Environmental Affairs.
2. Interpret applicable current and proposed local, state, federal and international environmental laws and regulations as they relate to Oshkosh Defense’s manufacturing activities and processes, and identify applicable requirements.
3. Serve as a member of the Oshkosh Defense environmental protection department's emergency response team.
4. Develop, maintain, and conduct environmental awareness employee-training programs to assure that Oshkosh Defense employees, whose activities are affected by requirements of applicable environmental laws and regulations, are, and continue to be, knowledgeable about conforming their activities to such requirements.
5. Lead compliance and program assessments of manufacturing sites; follow-up with manufacturing departments on successful closure of findings and recommendations.
6. Prepare necessary environmental-related reports, plans, and other submittals as required in conjunction with government contracts when applicable.
7. Review capital projects and major process changes to ensure that the changes appropriately address all applicable environmental aspects.
8. Review and/or prepare various annual environmental reports as required by local, state and federal agencies, ensuring such reports are accurate and submitted in a timely manner. Examples include state air emissions reports, hazardous waste reports, federal toxic chemical release reports, and other environmental-related community right-to-know reports.
9. Work on other projects as necessary in order to reduce environmental related risk, liability, and cost to the Oshkosh Defense Business Unit while following applicable laws and regulations.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Science or related area. A minimum of five years related experience is needed. An extensive knowledge of environmental laws and regulations is essential, with emphasis in the areas of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Hazardous Waste Regulations, and Community Right-to-Know Act is required. Practical experience with wastewater treatment and surface coating processes is desired. A proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines is also required.
Physical Requirements
Lifting 20 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers, and small tools. This job requires a moderate amount of walking, standing and sitting. Good eyesight and writing ability and keyboard skills. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment, including an air-purifying respirator, in emergency response situations is required. Ability to travel by automobile or commercial airline.
Travel Requirements
Willing and able to travel up to 25% of the time.
