Engineer III

Job Location: Lawrence, KS

To $107,000

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Part of the team devoted to new construction for the Generation Business Unit, this engineer will be involved in the construction of new generation assets, such as combustion turbines, wind turbines, coal plants and integrated combined cycle generating units.

Applies sound and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments in support of our new plant construction projects. Evaluates problems and makes well-advised technical recommendations and decisions to support the progress of assigned project work. Must have a strong background in power plant controls and/or power plant operations and power plant construction. The level of direct supervision afforded the engineer will depend on the level of experience and knowledge of project management, and frequent clear and concise written and verbal communication with the supervisor. Communication with power plant management staff is critical. Typical assignments would include plant improvement projects and environmental control projects from project scope identification, economic justification, engineering design, advanced planning, and project management and follow-up through completion.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited university. Experience in project engineering and project management is required. The specific job level depends on the nature and number of years of experience.

Engineer Pay Grade E
Requires at least five years of engineering or equivalent industrial experience. Direct supervisory experience of contractors, company employees, or management of a technical function, is beneficial. Requires maintaining a current approved "Engineer-In-Training" (EIT) testing application with the "Board of Technical Professions.”

Staff Engineer Pay Grade DD
Requires at least nine years of engineering or equivalent industrial experience. Has major responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. The engineer plans and develops major projects, which address unique or controversial problems having a significant effect on the organization. The engineer is recognized as a leader or authority in a distinct and significant area of specialization. Requires Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification and maintaining a current approved "Professional Engineer" (PE) testing application with the "Board of Technical Professions."

Senior Engineer Pay Grade D
Requires at least twelve years of engineering or equivalent industrial experience. Has full responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. The engineer plans and develops major projects, which address unique or controversial problems having a significant effect on the organization. The engineer is recognized as a leader or authority in a distinct and significant area of specialization. Must be a Registered Professional Engineer with a current license in the applicable state.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
The ability to interface effectively with project managers, client plant staff, engineering and maintenance management, architect/engineering personnel, and labor contractors is paramount to the engineer’s success in the position. Additionally, the engineer will be expected to possess or develop excellent project management skills to be utilized in the execution of assigned work. Requires knowledge of advanced engineering practices and principles in an industrial plant environment. Excellent time and priority management skills are required, in addition to outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Requires the ability to identify project solutions, perform economic justifications, generate project scope, perform detailed engineering and project planning, and provide project management services attendant to quality, cost, and schedule.
