Environmental Health & Safety Engineer

Job Location: Wichita, KS

Department: Human Resources

Hours: Full Time (7:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.)

Job Summary
Works under the general direction of the Manager, Human Resources with minimum direction on a wide variety of technical assignments within the environmental, health and safety (EH&S) disciplines. Is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of EH&S initiatives and regulations and property protection. Interacts effectively with environmental and health & safety agencies, customers, suppliers, site employees, corporate management as well as site management.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
This position involves knowledge of confidential information. Such information will be handled with the
utmost discretion.

Primary Responsibilities: Recruiting
1. Provides safety and environmental audits of new and existing equipment and processes; prepares recommendations and implement, as authorized.
2. Ensures workplace conditions comply with applicable federal and state occupational safety and health standard provisions.
3. Maintains, updates and ensures Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are up-to-date and employees have the ability to access those needed for their work area.
4. Performs workplace assessments, identifies hazardous conditions and takes corrective actions.
5. Launches and maintains safety-training initiatives to comply with OSHA and environmental requirements.
6. Maintains OSHA logs; ensure annual postings.
7. Interprets applicable federal and state laws, regulations and orders as they pertain to all environmental and safety issues in the assigned facility.
8. Implements policies and procedures that ensure compliance to appropriate laws, statutes or regulations.
9. Coordinates environmental permit administration as required for new processes and equipment.
10. Directs external environmental and other consultant services as needed for technical support.
11. Ensures necessary and timely environmental and safety record keeping, and submits report to federal/local authorities, company management and Kaman corporate, as required.
12. Participates and respond to internal/external inspections and audits regulatory agencies and Kaman corporate EH&S.
13. Receives annual Hazardous Waste training in waste compliance, regulatory information and any other training as required.
14. Acts as a liaison between facility and Kaman Corporate EH&S and Risk Management.
15. Provides innovative solutions to continually reduce air, water and waste reportable.
16. Work with Risk Management and insurance carriers to eliminate any EH&S issues that may lead to increased coverage costs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to write and prepare from standard to complicated written materials, reports, correspondence, etc.
2. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
3. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
4. Ability to perform basic and more complicated mathematic fundamentals – add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
5. Ability to use PC computers and have command of Microsoft software – Word and Excel, and others as needed.
6. Broad knowledge of a general technical field, such as environmental engineering, safety engineering, industrial hygiene or related field.
7. Positive customer service and interaction abilities with employees, customers and vendors. Communicate effectively with employees who express concerns or issues – maintaining a consistent level of emotional maturity in the handling of such issues.
8. Ability to solve problems within the department and with employees regarding both company and EH&S-related concerns.
9. Regularly works effectively, and relates well, with others including superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside of the company. Exhibits a consistent professional manner in all situations. Meets the public well.
10. Must have a valid Kansas driver’s license.
11. A thorough understanding of the company, its products and services that the company sells in order to properly understand the EH&S impacts on the business.
12. Strong people skills are required.
13. Strong keyboarding skills are required (minimum of 55 word per minutes).
14. Familiarity with office equipment (10-key, copiers, etc.).
15. Ability to handle and guard highly confidential and sensitive information and data.

Education and Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in related technical field or equivalent certification – such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Licensed Environmental Professional (LEP).
2. Experience in EH&S in a manufacturing environment.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
4. Strong command of computer skills is required:
a. All Microsoft Office software used by the company
b. All related payroll and HRIS computer systems and functions – will be trained in these systems.
5. Excellent customer and employee relations skills with both internal and external customers.
6. Experience with the handling of confidential information and data.

Work Authorization
Must qualify as a U.S. Person as defined by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) in order
to access export controlled technology.

Hazardous Materials Required Training
1. Annual RCRA training for all employees (and within six months of hire date).
2. HazCom annual training for all employees.

General: Maintain personal productivity and quality standards as determined by supervision. Follow standard departmental/company practices and procedures as outlined by management. Maintain area in a clean and orderly condition.
