This position will work 32 hrs per week

Job Description and Essential Functions

Job Title/Position: Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist

Job Classification: Direct Patient Care / Hands-On Patient Care

Brief Description of Job Responsibilities:

Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adult, neonatal and pediatric patient; assist in obtaining specimens from indwelling lines; instruct patients in all urine collection procedures and testing requirements; process specimens to prepare for lab testing, participate in education of students and new personnel; work with computer; communicate in a manner that promotes Clinic and laboratory professionalism as well as a comfortable experience for the patient.

  1. Maintains patient confidentiality
  2. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products
  3. Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients according to established protocol
  4. Process the test orders in the computer system, utilizing both Epic and Sunquest according to laboratory protocols.
  5. Performs Point of Care (POC) testing and resulting in the laboratory information system with accuracy.
  6. Performs and documents quality control for POC testing.
  7. Maintains knowledge of all routine container and minimum volumes required for specimen collection
  8. Verifies patient test orders with samples received, verifies all specimens are labeled and stored in accordance with lab requirements.
  9. Handles specimen master logs and tracking forms using appropriate functions.
  10. Assists in the processing of specimens to prepare for lab testing. Centrifuges and aliquots specimens into appropriately labeled tubes, separates and distributes according to test area, prepares for transport.
  11. Assists in care of patient prior to, during and after collection
  12. Instructs patients on urine collection with proper completion of forms
  13. Keeps work area clean, neat, and organized, complying with OSHA guidelines.
  14. Cleans and maintains equipment in work area
  15. Inventories supplies for re-order
  16. Attends required meetings
  17. Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs
  18. Assists with laboratory reception duties and other duties as required or requested by supervisor, manager, or director.
  19. Maintains CPR certification and other required training

  4. Promote comfortable phlebotomy with professional behavior and attire
  5. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced clinical lab environment and maintain a high level of accuracy
  6. Ability to follow detailed instructions
  7. Self motivated and well organized
  8. Dependable in attendance and punctuality
  9. Willing to work as needed including overtime
  10. Assumes responsibility for professional development and continuing education
  11. Other duties as they relate to Occupational Health activities at the worksite and in the WorkMed program


  1. High school diploma
  2. Good phlebotomy skills, knowledge of laboratory tests and procedures
  3. Graduate of accredited phlebotomy program or related field, preferred
  4. Phlebotomy certification preferred
  5. Prefer a minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience
  6. Knowledge of clinic and laboratory policies and procedures and medical terminology
  7. Knowledge of safety guidelines, laboratory tests, CPT codes, and insurance and diagnosis requirements

Non-Essential Duties: Other duties as assigned within scope of practice

Typical Working Conditions:

Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Work is performed in the laboratory area and involves constant contact with patients. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires full range of body motion. Work may require sitting for long periods of time; also stooping, bending, and stretching to perform blood draws and for files and supplies. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds. Requires manual and finger dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, type, operate a calculator, telephone, copier, fax machine, and such other office equipment as necessary. Requires eye-hand coordination. Requires visual acuity correctable to 20/30, ability to differentiate colors, and hearing within normal range.

  1. Unload and carry up to 40 lbs of supplies
  2. Push / pull patients with wheelchair multiple times daily
