This position will work 32 -40 hrs per week

Job Description and Essential Functions

Job Title/Position: Occupational Health Nurse

Brief Description of Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall occupational health and safety of all contracted company personnel. Promotes the optimum health of employees by pre-placement screening and maintains an ongoing evaluation of employees in regard to their health and safety. Is involved with surveillance, identification, reporting, injury prevention and health maintenance of company personnel. Is responsible for providing direct care and assists with other occupational and environmental health services as needed. This position is to be used for OHN coverage at an existing account.

  1. Interrelates with Prevea WorkMed case manager and coordinates responsibilities for case managing the injured or ill employee
  2. Follow up with employees returning to work after illness, injury, or prolonged absence
  3. Documents all employee illnesses or injuries and records follow-up care on the appropriate forms and maintains confidential health files on company employees
  4. Collaborates with company management and the occupational health practitioners to carry out the objectives as determined by the specific company account
  5. Provides initial assessment of on the job illness or injury and refers for further evaluation as required
  6. Provides direct care, including treatment of occupational illness and injuries
  7. Coordinates/provides for appropriate care, treatment, and follow up of work related health events based on the knowledge of the specific work environment or job functions
  8. Assesses non-occupational illnesses occurring at work, determines the need for treatment and gives guidance to seek care from personal health care practitioners
  9. Performs health screenings and health assessments and performs related testing
  10. Provides health-related counseling for employees within the scope of nursing knowledge and practice
  11. Maintains and safeguards confidentiality of employee health information and records.
  12. Conducts workplace walkthroughs/assessments
  13. Provides occupational health surveillance testing including audiometric, vision screening, medical clearance for respirator use, and Pirometry as appropriate
  14. Assists with health promotion activities, education and training including health fairs and other related activities
  15. Assumes responsibility for professional development and continuing education
  16. Other duties as they relate to Occupational Health activities at the worksite and in the Work Med program

Specialized Responsibilities:


  1. License in the State of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse
  2. Bachelor degree in nursing and certification in occupational health nursing preferred
  3. Certification in Occupational Health or Case Management preferred
  4. Five years of experience in a health care setting and experience in occupational health nursing preferred

Non-Essential Duties: Other duties as assigned within scope of practice

Performance Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care
  2. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care
  3. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  4. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
  5. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide on-going patient care
  1. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions
  2. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence
  3. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance
  4. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public
  5. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  6. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  7. Ability to communicate clearly
  8. Knowledge of OSHA and other regulatory guidelines preferred
  9. Ability to function autonomously and make independent nursing judgments
  10. Excellence in customer service and superior communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential

Typical Working Conditions:

Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and / or a clinic environment. Works in a factory setting but with an office. Deals mainly with workers and their supervisors. Is required to drive from site to site depending on what locations are needed to travel to.

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries weights up to 50 pounds. Requires visual acuity correctable to 20/30 or better and hearing within normal range. Requires exposure to communicable disease and bodily fluids. Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
