Title: Life Skills Coach Reports To: Unit Nurse Salary: $11.00/hour Position: Full-Time, As Needed 3pm to 10pm Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Director and utilizing the best practices model as communicated by the State of Oklahoma, Life Skill Coaches provide behavior management, redirection, problem solving and remedial training to include communication, coping strategies, self help strategies, safety principles, substance use decision strategies, and daily living skills for residents of the Clients facility. Duties and Responsibilities: -
Observe, record and report health symptoms as well as the behavior and activity of residents, as evidenced by charting, escorting residents, assisting with activities of daily living and assisting residents to achieve their daily goal(s) through support and paraprofessional counseling techniques. -
Provide activities of daily living supervision. -
Take vital signs of assigned residents. -
Obtain lab specimens as assigned. -
Provide paraprofessional counseling and instruction to residents by directing their daily activities, providing support and helping them develop and achieve personal goals as indicated in treatment plan and community group. -
Intervenes in crisis situations, utilizing verbal intervention effectively and physical interventions as needed, articulating to the consumer the justification for use of limit setting, seclusion or restraint, as indicated by facility protocol, residents crisis plan, treatment plan and physicians orders. -
Provide education and life skill training during individual and group activities according to residents crisis and treatment plans. -
Facilitate relaxation, leisure, and recreation activities as scheduled. -
Implements simple health and safety precautions. -
Provide resident supervision, implementing group and individual crisis plans and treatment plans. -
Develop constructive relationships with residents, coworkers and other treatment team members. -
Maintain close communication with rest of treatment team and keep others informed as appropriate or as instructed to do so. -
Cooperate with the treatment team. -
Implement ongoing supervision recommendations. -
Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines for interactions regarding Consumer information. -
Order and receive approved supplies. -
Provide general housekeeping according to facility guidelines. -
Demonstrate a positive attitude, treating others in a courteous, respectful and professional manner. -
Supports and promotes a service environment for individuals in need of behavioral health and/or co-occurring services that is recovery focused, welcoming, and attentive to the needs of individuals who may have experienced trauma in their lives. -
Perform a basic screening to determine whether COD might exist and be able to refer the consumer for a formal diagnostic assessment for co-occurring disorders. -
Be able to engage the client in such a way as to enhance and facilitate future interaction. -
Have the skills to de-escalate consumers who are agitated, anxious, angry, or in other vulnerable emotional states. -
Manage a crisis involving a consumer, including a threat of suicide or harm to others. -
Refer a consumer to the appropriate mental health or substance abuse treatment facility when needed, and follow up to ensure the client receives needed care. -
Have knowledge of psychotropic medications and their actions. -
Use integrated models of assessment, intervention, and recovery for person having both substance-related and mental disorders. -
Collaboratively develop and implement an integrated treatment plan based on thorough assessment that addresses both/all disorders and establishes sequenced goals based on urgent needs, considering the stage of recovery and level of engagement. -
Additional tasks as needed. Experience: -
Requires completion of 60 hours of college or equivalent experience. Equivalent may include substituting up to 2 years of relevant employment, or responsibility in the care of children with complex emotional needs. -
CLEET certification or ability to obtain. Supervisor Requirements: The professional hired will not be responsible for the direct supervision of any staff. Knowledge and Abilities: -
Demonstrate the ability to provide resident supervision. -
Demonstrate the ability to identify strengths and needs of the youth. -
Demonstrate the ability to resolve conflict. -
Demonstrate basic knowledge of disorders/diagnoses of childhood. -
Demonstrate knowledge of the signs for alcohol/substance use/abuse and potential suicide. -
Demonstrate knowledge of the developmental stages of childhood and family. -
Demonstrate an understanding of the effects of trauma, including child abuse and neglect as well as other types of trauma on the child and family (e.g. medical trauma, witnessing domestic abuse or violence, accidents, war, natural disaster, etc.). -
Demonstrate an understanding of disabilities, including the effects of the disabilities on the child and the family, and community attitudes towards children with disabilities and their families. -
Demonstrate the ability to manage challenging behaviors and teach appropriate behavioral skills. -
Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to and respect for family roles, culture, socioeconomic status, and value differences. -
Demonstrate the ability to observe, record and report health symptoms, behavior and activity of residents as related to their family and community culture, as well as be able to demonstrate the ability to observe and document symptoms as outlined in procedure. -
Demonstrate the ability to implementing group and individual treatment plans. -
Demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure with efficiency and consistency while maintaining a balance between good physical and mental health and the job requirements. -
Demonstrate the ability to understand, use and accept supervision. -
Must be able to climb stairs and access non-(handicap) accessible equipped residences/facilities. -
Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision. -

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements for positions include: arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity enough to use a keyboard and telephone; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; may be subject to walking, standing, sitting, and reaching; and vision, speech, and hearing sufficient to perform the essential tasks. Any physical restrictions should be discussed or noted within the interview process.
