Job Summary:

Collects, prepares and performs a variety of laboratory tests, from routine to complex, which require independent judgment. Assists with department procedures, including quality assurance, proficiency testing, calibrations, and completes related laboratory duties. Identifies technical, instrumental, and physiologic causes of unexpected results and communicates with providers the necessary information to resolve inconsistencies. Troubleshoots analyzer and procedural problems and works towards resolution. Supervises trainees and other support personnel as directed by the supervisor. Demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction, professionalism, and safety.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:
  • Willingly works as scheduled to facilitate expedient collection of samples. Voluntarily assists with outpatients and phlebotomy when needed.
  • Collects and prepares biological specimens for analyses using appropriate techniques and maintains the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed.
  • Performs various analyses on biological specimens and completes related laboratory duties with speed and accuracy.
  • Selects, evaluates, and reports quality control for the shift. Takes appropriate corrective action for out-of-control results. Recognizes instrument malfunction, troubleshoots, and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Edits results, when necessary, documents according to established protocol and credits patient accounts or refers patient account credits to appropriate personnel.
  • Ensures prompt reporting of patient results for assigned department. Investigates problems involving collection, result reporting, and turn-around-time. Organizes department workload for maximum efficiency.
  • Develops solutions to problems and takes appropriate action in the absence of the Section Head/Senior Technologist. Knows how to find helpful information in manuals.
  • Performs proficiency testing according to policy demonstrating competence in laboratory testing.
  • Asks appropriate questions and observes performance of trainee to ensure competency.
  • Coordinates general workflow based upon workload and staffing for maximum productivity and efficiency of section. Ensures smooth transition of duties within current shift and for oncoming shift.

    Additional Requirements:

    Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
