Desired Skills: Description: Review date 5-1-2013. Looking for an individual to join us at the Extension Regional Center in Mitchell, South Dakota. The Water Resources Extension Field Specialist I position will provide leadership for educational programs to improve the productivity and sustainability of agricultural production while protecting water quality and quantity. RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will develop Extension programming related to water issues associated with agricultural production. The specialist will develop educational materials for delivery through new and traditional media. Specific programming areas could include agricultural water conservation and management; best management practices to reduce nonpoint source pollution from agricultural, rural, and urban sources; animal waste management systems; developing, implementing, and managing TMDL programs; and irrigation and drainage systems. The successful candidate will develop partnerships with producer groups, agribusinesses, government agencies, conservation and other stakeholder groups, and individual producers and will secure external funding to enhance programming. The specialist will work closely with Faculty in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department and will collaborate in applied or on-farm research to support educational programs and will cooperate with other Field Specialists, State Specialists, and other faculty and staff in developing a viable and impactful program. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Master`s degree by the starting date of employment with at least one degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (or a similarly named major), Environmental Engineering, Water or Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Hydrology, or a closely related discipline. - Teaching or outreach experience in formal or informal settings. - Excellent communications skills. - Ability to work effectively in teamwork and collaboration. - Ability or potential to develop a quality Extension program in water quality and quantity related to agricultural production systems. - Valid driver`s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Previous Extension experience. - Knowledge of Midwest or Great Plains agricultural systems. - Knowledge of federal and state water resources laws and regulations governing water resources. - Knowledge of technology for delivering educational programs. - Ability to development financial support through grant writing or cost recovery experience. - Registered or is eligible to pursue registration as a Professional Engineer.
