Primary Purpose
Develops and maintains a profitable book of small business accounts (as determined by the company) by acquiring, evaluating, and analyzing information relative to risks to make selection and pricing decisions that are consistent with Societys underwriting philosophy and in accordance with departmental and company guidelines and parameters.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

- Determines acceptability of small accounts by evaluating renewal and new business accounts based on profit potential and company guidelines.
- Prices business relative to risk and exposure by applying expertise and judgment in conjunction with company guidelines and underwriting decisions.
- Minimizes risk and improves profitability by communicating over the phone, through written correspondence, and through on-site visits with agents and insureds.
- Attracts business through building and managing positive professional relationships with agents and Regional Sales Managers (RSMs) consistent with organizational expectations and culture; determines appropriate communication methods to assist in building positive relationships including, but not limited to, travel to agents offices as necessary.
- Acts as a liaison by helping customers solve problems with other departments such as claims, billing, auditing, etc.
- Proposes recommendations by reviewing and analyzing Risk Control reports.
- Contributes to team effort by supporting business direction, assisting others in the department, demonstrating a willingness to contribute above and beyond the responsibilities identified in the position description and participating in scheduled underwriting meetings.
- Completes special projects as assigned by manager.
- Engages in and successfully completes all educational elements and exercises as assigned by the Underwriting Manager or Trainer.

Required:
- Bachelors degree or a combination of significant continuing education in the insurance field and work experience in the insurance industry based on managements discretion.
- Basic competency with desktop applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred:
- 3+ years of commercial underwriting experience with accounts similar to Society Insurances accounts.
- Demonstrated proficiency in utilization of underwriting templates.
- Experience working in a paperless office environment.
