Components Engineer III

Job Location: Clifton, NJ

Position Description:
Our client is seeking an intermediate level component engineer with military specification experience to support GPS space programs. The engineer will address complex components and reliability issues and lead the evaluation of components used in our client’s satellite systems. The candidate is also expected to perform reliability analyses and design experiments to ascertain the reliability of parts selected. SCD and Non-standard part processing is expected.

Scope and Principal Duties:
Provides engineering expertise on complex technical problems in a broad field of engineering, research and development for highly complex and technical space-based aerospace products. Uses the application of engineering standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques which are highly innovative and ingenious. Designs, develops, tests and verifies complex engineering in electrical, mechanical, optical, software, systems, and/or hardware components. Work will encompass a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions. The role involves design and development engineering assignments related to products and systems including the engineering of new products or updates to existing products.
  • Will assist in the radiation/survivability design of GPS satellite. Specific duties include analysis, design and test of aforementioned.
  • Duties to include: Part selection guidance, reliability experiment design, mathematical modeling, circuit analyses, PAPL/PAML generation, SCD generation, supplier qualification, DID compliance for parts, data review, and other Component Engineering duties as required by the program.

Job Specifications and Work Performed:
  • Creates, develops and designs complex and difficult mechanisms, systems and equipment which require a broad knowledge of several fields and an extensive knowledge of own specialty.
  • Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. May lead R&D project or program team.
  • Prepares for periodic management reviews as required to give management visibility on the status and progress of assigned projects. Prepares theoretical studies of involved technical subjects that find wide application to design problems or that are required where previous methods and techniques have not produced satisfactory results.
  • Studies the basic design ideas and methods of approach proposed by other engineering personnel: consults available technical data, analyzes previous design, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk.
  • Confers engineering personnel and customer representatives to assure proper consideration of customer requirements. Collaborates with other engineers in order to assure proper compromise on the best theoretical design in the interest of basic and practical considerations.
  • Develops methods and techniques to be used for standardization of approach to specific design problems. Prepares technical descriptions of basic designs, and engineering estimates for inclusion in bids and proposals or presentations to customers.
  • Represents the organization as a prime technical contact on contracts, projects or products.
  • Analyzes engineering plans and projects to establish operating data and conducts experimental tests; analyzes proposals and related technical data to develop design alternatives.
  • Plans design layouts in order to study the operation, select major components, assure conformance to functional and operating requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing and maintainability standpoint.
  • Investigates problem areas and initiates corrective measures relating to the interpretation of technical data and the functioning of equipment during prototype construction or manufacturing phases and field installation.
  • Prepares progress reports relating to assignments as required. Confers with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for application to assigned equipment. Prepares specifications and design parameters for equipment to be designed and/or built by subcontractors.
  • Maintains technical competence and state-of-the-art expertise in areas of technical specialization. This is accomplished by reviewing technical publications and books, attending technical seminars and Company training, and taking academic courses.
  • Maintains engineering notebooks in department approved repository for work products in accordance with established policy and procedures. Keeps abreast of the state-of-the-art by reading technical journals and publications.

Education and Experience:
Requires B.S. degree, preferably in Engineering, physics or in a technical area of science and research with 4-8 years work experience or a MS degree with 1-5 years experience. Component engineering position experience with specific application in satellite and high reliability programs a major asset. An understanding of basic electronics, applied physics, probability and statistics required. An understanding of radiation effects on electronics and semiconductor physics is an asset.

Responsibility and Authority:
An independent contributor that ma function as organization spokesperson on advanced projects or programs. Works under consultative direction toward long range goals and objectives.

  • Must have accomplished skills in engineering disciplines above. Must be able to communicate effectively the technology, its application and benefits to a wide audience to include customers and management.
  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of business competencies, business unit operations, financial objectives, and support the business initiatives and objectives.
  • Supervisory Responsibility: NONE
  • Contact Responsibility (internal or external)
  • Interacts with external customers an engineering level and interacts with internal personnel. Is a representative of the organization as a technical contact to multiple departments and site locations across the company.

Working Condition:
General office environment, laboratory, manufacturing area, or research areas requiring the ability to stand or site for long periods of time. Personal protective equipment maybe required to be used. Position requires the ability to work with computers and lift up to 25 pounds.

Security Clearance:
This position may require the passing of both a background investigation and polygraph to achieve a variety of compartmented national security clearances. The individual holding this position must be a U.S. Citizen.
