Job Description:
Basic Functions

Reporting to a Vice President or Director of Operations is responsible for the overall business planning and profitable operation of a region territory, including possible branch locations, generating sales revenues of between $4-$15 million, that provide services to the construction industry and industrial maintenance markets within the territory serviced. In this capacity, works closely with subordinate Branch Managers, Sales Managers, Administrative Managers and Operations Managers, coordinating the efforts of generally 15-40 employees to ensure that the needs of present customers are being met while new business opportunities are being pursued aggressively. Establishes personal contact and engages in sales negotiations and problem resolution with customer concerns not only to secure immediate business, but also to enhance the reputation and presence of Company as a supplier of quality services on a long-term basis. In addition, holds primary responsibility for the smooth and cost-effective direction of the region operations and related activities, building and maintaining a strong management team committed to attaining the Divisions strategic growth goals while adhering strictly to required internal procedures, safety programs and budgetary controls.

Organization Relationships:

Reports to: Vice President or Director, Operations
Immediate Subordinates: Branch Manager(s), Sales Manager, Administrative Manager and Operations Manager.

Position Responsibilities:

1.Participates in the development of a complete, well-integrated strategic business plan that provides clear objectives and direction in terms of sales goals, pricing strategies/bid procedures, operational capabilities and new market penetration opportunities designed to exploit the business growth potential of the Region.

2.Works closely with subordinates, providing leadership and expertise to ensure that strong Branch management teams are in place. Establishes local procedures to enforce Division policy, guides and counsels, and regularly appraises performance of subordinates in order to provide for capable management succession.

3.Appraises results of Region operations regularly and systematically and in consultation with Division senior management, causes changes in tactics or business emphasis to meet unexpected problems or to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

4.As appropriate, reviews and/or evaluates contracts, proposals, appropriation and expenditure requests submitted by customers or subordinates. Approves those within limits of authority or submits those beyond authority to the appropriate officer with personal assessment and final recommendation.

5.Monitors key market areas within the Region and provides specific intelligence to Division management on the basis of cost analyses, personal knowledge of the industry, proposed legislation and current economic/competitive conditions that may impact forecasted sales results. Develops and maintains a system to keep abreast of the activities of all-important competitors in Region territory.

6.Builds and maintains strong professional relationships with customers and specifying influences in order to promote the profitable sale of Division products based on quality and service to the customer rather than simply the lowest price.

7.Directs and assists, where necessary, in the effective and timely collection of accounts receivable.

8.Leads and manages the Region safety program.

9.Ensures compliance with all Division policies and the Division internal control framework.

Education:

Bachelors Degree required, preferably in business administration, marketing or engineering.

Personal Qualifications:

Minimum of ten years experience, preferably in sales or operations dealing with multi-branch locations. Past background in the construction or construction-related services industries is highly preferred.

Must be entrepreneurially-minded with an unusual blend of leadership, business maturity, judgment and communications skills both written and verbal.

Must have solid business planning skills and the ability to work effectively with financial data and internal control policies.

Must be willing to travel extensively to customer locations and all Branch operations within the Region on a continuing basis.

Must have executive presence, conducting him/herself in such a manner as to ensure ready acceptance within the Company while earning the trust of all customer groups. In dealings with others, his or her personal integrity must be unquestioned.

A team player who demonstrates self-motivation and a positive, can-do attitude in working with others and importantly, in empowering subordinates to do their best work in pursuit of Division business objectives. Must be a hands-on, shirt-sleeve leader interested in doing whatever it takes to accomplish both personal and Division goals.

Region Manager Recommended Skill Sets

Education and Training:

Bachelors Degree preferred, preferably in business administration, marketing or engineering.
Evidence of formal/informal management training, e.g., disciplinary/grievance, recruitment and retention, managing absence, finance and budget management.
Evidence of leadership courses/training.
Training on effective appraisal.
Knowledge and application of professional standards pertaining to the construction industry i.e., OSHA.
An appreciation and/or strong knowledge of finance/general accounting.

(E)Experience:

Experience in an operational management environment, preferably in a construction company.
Minimum of five years experience in management leadership.
Experience of managing a budget and business planning.
Developing strategic direction for team.

Considerable prior experience in managing and developing customer relationships, identifying and closing opportunities with appropriate customers in a lead role.
Familiarity with the construction industry gained from direct experience, preferably in selling construction related equipment.
Knowledge of the Companys products.
