SUMMARY

Performs maintenance, calibration, and repair of various types of equipment which may include fixed and portable gas monitoring systems, emergency lighting and air movement / ventilation equipment. Maintains hand-held and confined space radio communication equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO CARRY OUT THE JOB
Technical Knowledge, Years of Related Experience, Certifications Required, Equipment and/or Systems Experience

Ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, manufacturers manuals, wiring guides, schematics, diagrams and blueprints, safety and quality instructions).
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Second language is a plus.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  
High School diploma or GED and associates degree, technical or military training strongly preferred.
Knowledge of electronics and electrical principles. Completion of manufacturers specific training.
Experience with electronic test equipment (DVM, amp probe, oscilloscope, signal generator, etc.) Demonstrated ability to efficiently maintain, install, repair and calibrate a variety of instruments, controls, gauges and metering devices which may include electronic circuitry, and return monitoring equipment back to active status within established time frame. Ability to estimate time and material costs for assigned projects. 
Ability to read, interpret and record data from meters, gauges, panels, computer consoles and other equipment. Demonstrated ability to use precision measuring devices, testing equipment and tools.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to use RentalMan or similar AS400 mainframe based computer system.
Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose more complex process and equipment problems and take corrective action within policy and procedure limitations.
Valid driver's license from state of residence and valid proof of vehicle insurance. Must possess good driving record and be insurable for Total Safety vehicle insurance while driving company truck.
Proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility and customer required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Trained in Respiratory Protection and fully certified to wear respiratory breathing equipment (Fit Tested).
Be willing travel to customers site and available for travel for short and long-term out-of-town or offshore projects.
Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.

TRAINING REQUIRED
What training will an employee require to successfully perform the duties of the position?

Employee Orientation. Equipment Manufacturers training and certification. OJT in Portable Electronics Equipment Maintenance and Calibration and in hand-held radios.
All other training if interested in advancing to E&I Tech II.
Performs some advanced functions and may cross-train for other functions as part of training and development.

Learning Curve: How much time is required to effectively perform the job?  9 -12 months

SCOPE AND IMPACT OF THE JOB

Nature of Supervisory Responsibility: No Supervisory responsibility, but serves as a resource to others. May assist with training less experienced staff.

Degree of supervision received or the degree of autonomy given: The degree to which supervisor outlines the methods to be followed or results to be obtained and checks work or progress. 
General supervision: Broad instructions covering generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines and priorities are given.

Complexity of Duties and Decisions: The extent to which duties are guided by standard policy, practice or precedents or the amount of resourcefulness and planning and creative effort in devising new methods, policies, procedures, products or original application.
Duties involve the use of several procedures or processes and generally have predetermined standards. Uses some judgement to arrange job details in order to achieve pre-determined objectives.   May recommend or adapt procedures, techniques, tools, material and/or equipment to meet special needs. Is expected to suggest process improvements.

Initiative: Describe the ingenuity, creative imagination or original thought that is expected of the job.
Uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments.  Asks for direction whenever events don't unfold as previously discussed or planned.  Keeps supervisor informed of problems.

How are errors detected and what is the possible impact of those errors?
Most errors are caught during self-inspection or by higher level staff before leaving work unit. Supervisor reviews progress versus detailed check for technical adequacy and conformance with practice and policy.

INTERPERSONAL / COMMUNICATIONS
Indicate internal and external contacts and purpose of contacts.

Frequent contact with other facility personnel in order to understand issues.

Work Environment:  Shop environment. Electricity and shock hazards. The noise level in work environment is usually moderate.  

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, is regularly required to sit, stand walk and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
