ROLE SUMMARY
Performs a variety of tasks including assisting, scrubbing, preparing and cleanup of surgical cases in the OR. Responsible for the proper instrumentation and supplies for each case. Fiscal management of supplies is a shared responsibility for all team members. Must be conscious of sterile technique at all times. Performs the functions as assigned. Works under the direction of an RN. Surgical technician is an entry level position or recent graduate from certified program.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Collaborates with and assists the professional staff as needed. Assists the service coordinates, charge nurses. Supervisor and director in identifying needs.
2. Restocks the OR rooms when needed, assists with room turnover and cleaning after each case.
3. Properly maintains sterile instruments and adheres to proper sterilization techniques according to department policy, completely uses the autoclave and Sterile units as well as monitors the sterile field for possible breaks in sterile technique
4. Works daily with assigned preceptor. Competently assists the surgeon during the operative procedure. Anticipates surgeons needs to expedite the procedure thereby minimizing the patient's exposure to trauma.
5. Works daily with assigned preceptor. Prepares in advance for scheduled cases by reviewing text books or other available literature.
6. Maintains case log and meets with preceptor biweekly to discuss progress.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- Able to identify and select the instruments and equipment necessary for most surgical procedures and picks cases appropriately.
- Able to maintain strict aseptic
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Maintains CPR certification
- Able to maintain on call rotation
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Completion of an appropriate technician program or previous technician experience of at least one year.
- certification preferred.
