Position Description:
The University of Arkansas seeks an outstanding individual to fill the 21st Century Chair in Transportation. The appointment is expected at the rank of Full Professor.
The 21st Century Chair in Transportation was created through the billion-dollar capital campaign at the University of Arkansas. The holder of the 21st Century Chair is expected to be an active member of the Civil Engineering faculty, teach transportation courses, and make scholarly contributions to the transportation studies program. Research and teaching areas of particular interest include transportation planning and transportation security issues.
The 21st Century Chair will have significant opportunities for collaboration through the Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center (MBTC). Established in 1993 through the University Transportation Centers (UTC) program of the U.S. Department of Transportation, MBTC conducts and sponsors research, education, and technology transfer activities specifically targeted at improving the quality of life in rural areas through improved transportation networks, infrastructure, and services. The current annual budget of MBTC is in excess of $2 million. In addition, MBTC was recently selected as the Lead Institution for the newly-created National Transportation Security Center of Excellence through the Department of Homeland Security.
The Department of Civil Engineering currently has 14 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members, approximately 270 undergraduate students, 40 master's students, and 12 doctoral candidates. In addition to the Ph.D., three master's degrees are offered: MS in civil engineering (MSCE), MS in transportation engineering (MSTE), and MS in environmental engineering (MSEnE). The BSCE, MSTE and MSEnE degrees are ABET-accredited. The total University enrollment is approximately 19,000 students.
Desirable applicants will have a B.S. in civil engineering (or closely related field) and a Ph.D. with a strong record of transportation related research and leadership which will complement existing capabilities within the department and college. Faculty are expected to be licensed Professional Engineers. Licensure in the state of Arkansas is required before tenure is granted.
