Description:
The University of Arkansas seeks an energetic individual to provide visionary administrative leadership for the extension, instruction, and research functions of the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences (CSES). The CSES Head facilitates coordination and communication for statewide agronomic and environmental science research and extension programs at the Fayetteville campus, Little Rock Extension Headquarters, and Research and Extension Centers. The Department Head is responsible for administering state, national, and international programs, and maintaining close relationships with students, Bumpers College departments, farm organizations, commodity check-off boards, state and federal agencies, agronomic-support and supply industries, commodity associations, and alumni. The CSES Department currently has 40 faculty members. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Crop Management and Environmental, Soil, and Water Science with a current enrollment of 90 undergraduate students. Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees are also offered with a current enrollment of 60 graduate students.
Major Responsibilities:
Administer the human, fiscal, and physical resources to best achieve the CSES department's goals and objectives within established State, University, and Division of Agriculture guidelines, policies, and strategic plans. Provide visionary leadership in planning, integrating, and implementing CSES programs in extension, research, and undergraduate and graduate instruction. Foster professional development, assign responsibilities to faculty and staff and evaluate performance for awards, promotion, salary, and tenure decisions. Facilitate appropriate external grant funding and development of support and resources for departmental programs including gift and endowment opportunities. Conduct regularly scheduled faculty and extension meetings and promote collegial, periodic conferences/activities and social events. Represent departmental interests to administrators, other academic departments, outside agencies, alumni, agricultural, environmental, and industrial groups and individuals. The Head will also serve as part of the broader administrative team of the Division of Agriculture and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.

Qualifications:
Requires a doctorate in crop, environmental, soil, water, or weed science or a closely related discipline. The candidate must possess a record of outstanding professional achievement that will qualify for tenure at the rank of full professor; the administrative abilities to direct an academic department engaged in extension, instruction, and research activities; commitment to interdisciplinary extension, instruction and research programs; visionary leadership skills; demonstrated understanding of the land grant university mission and philosophy; evidence of ability to effectively manage human, financial and physical resources; demonstrated knowledge of agronomic, environmental and socioeconomic issues affecting producers, business managers, consumers, and policy makers; a commitment to lead efforts to recruit and retain faculty, staff and students; strong communication skills; and the ability to inspire productivity.
