The Department is comprehensive and supports activities and professionals both on campus level and throughout the state:
(1) Resident Instruction is provided by eleven faculty at the Fayetteville campus with approximately 130 undergraduate majors and twenty-five graduate students. The three undergraduate areas of concentration are: Agricultural Management/Marketing, Pre-law/Agricultural Law, and Agricultural Economics. The Department offers the Master of Science with thesis and non-thesis options. One non-thesis option includes a semester of study at the University of Ghent. Departmental faculty supervise doctoral students in Public Policy, Environmental Dynamics, and Economics. Students also take classes in the Walton College of Business.
(2) Research is coordinated under the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. All eleven Fayetteville faculty are supported by the Station as well as three faculty located at research stations elsewhere in the state. Arkansas agriculture is balanced with row crops dominating in the east and livestock-particularly poultry and cattle-in the west. Faculty have statewide, national and international recognition. Emphases are national and international agricultural policy for both crops and poultry. Environment and sustainability, food safety, agricultural finance, risk and farm management, and rural development are primary concerns. Interdisciplinary research and acquiring external funding are highly prized.
(3) Extension efforts are coordinated under the Division of Agriculture's Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service which is headquartered in Little Rock, the state capital. Four faculty have 100% Extension appointments and five additional faculty have Extension responsibilities located at research stations and campuses around the state. Extension faculty provide programmatic leadership and support to county offices in the areas of economic (rural) development, farm management, policy, marketing, specialty agriculture, and precision agriculture. Interdisciplinary outreach efforts, interaction with industry leaders and stakeholders, and external funding are priorities of Extension efforts.
(4) Service responsibilities include serving on College and Division committees as well as representing the University and Division to the public through appropriate media, and participation in state, national and international activities.
