Facilities: Animal care and experimentation will be conducted at the University of Arkansas Poultry Research Farm. Fully equipped office space and laboratories are within the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science.

Staff and Facilities: The Center of Excellence for Poultry Science consists of 28 faculty in various disciplines. The Poultry Science Center is a university-wide program that also includes five scientists from the USDA Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit. The Department of Poultry Science and affiliated USDA scientists are housed in the Poultry Science Center, a 112,000 square foot, laboratory, classroom and office complex located on the campus of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. programs are offered by the Department of Poultry Science.

Annual Salary:
$28,000 per year, plus benefits package

Minimum Requirements:
The minimum requirement for this Program Associate I is a Master’s degree, preferably in Poultry Science, Animal Science or the Biological Sciences. Established abilities to conduct RT-PCR techniques, and familiarity with Windows programs and spreadsheets, are essential skills. Experience with animal care or small animal surgery is desirable. Specific training will be provided in other areas of responsibility.

Job Duties:
The Program Associate will manage and execute research projects in the areas of cardio-pulmonary physiology and histopathology, and will effectively contribute to the pursuit of extramural grant support. The Program Associate will be responsible for recording data, maintaining data records using a computerized spreadsheet, statistical analysis and graphical representation of data, and preparing reports for sponsoring companies or agencies. In specified cases the Program Associate will prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in refereed scientific journals. These responsibilities will be conducted in an independent fashion, supported by regular coordination and consultation with the Program Leader (Dr. Robert F. Wideman). Additional duties will include: animal handling, weighing, and care; small animal anesthesia and surgery; operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment; biological sample collection, tissue fixation, preparation and staining for histopathology and immunohistochemistry; development, validation, and use of analytical assays; training and assisting undergraduate and graduate students; conducting library reference searches and literature reviews; general laboratory management including ordering and maintaining adequate stocks of supplies; obtaining bids on equipment and supplies; and, other duties as assigned. The minimum requirements include demonstrated competence to independently manage programs, a Master’s degree in Poultry Science or a related area, 2 to 5 years of work experience and documented accomplishments, and a high level of achievement in the area of appointment.
