Description:
The University of Arkansas seeks an energetic individual to provide creative leadership in extension, research, teaching and service for the Department of Plant Pathology. The successful candidate will proactively lead continuing efforts to build strong multidisciplinary research and extension programs in applied and basic plant pathology, and provide leadership for teaching programs. The Department Head facilitates coordination for plant pathology research and extension at the Fayetteville campus, Little Rock Extension Headquarters, and Research and Extension Centers throughout the state. The Head promotes departmental interests in state, regional, national, and international programs, and maintains relationships with departments in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, farm organizations, commodity check-off boards, state and federal agencies, industry, students and alumni. The Department currently has 17 faculty members and offers degree programs in Plant Pathology (M.S.), Plant Science-Plant Pathology (Ph.D.), and Cell and Molecular Biology (M.S. and Ph.D.).

Minimum Requirements:
A doctoral degree in plant pathology or a closely related discipline is required. The candidate must possess a record of outstanding professional achievement that will qualify for the rank of full professor; the ability and commitment to direct an academic department engaged in multidisciplinary extension, research and teaching; demonstrated understanding of the land-grant university mission; evidence of ability to effectively manage human, financial and physical resources; knowledge of plant pathology-related issues affecting producers, businesses, consumers, and policy makers; a commitment to lead efforts to recruit and retain faculty, staff and students; and strong communication skills.

Job Duties:
Management of human, fiscal, and physical resources to attain departmental goals within established State, University, and Division of Agriculture policies and strategic plans. Provide exemplary leadership in planning, integrating, and implementing research, extension, and teaching programs. Provide direction for needs assessment and strategic planning. Encourage professional development, assign faculty and staff duties, and evaluate performance for awards, promotion, salary, and tenure decisions. Actively promote and facilitate external funding opportunities for faculty and the department, including research grants, gifts and endowments. Conduct regular faculty and extension meetings and encourage collegial activities. Advocate departmental interests to administrators, other academic programs, outside agencies, alumni, agricultural and industrial groups. The Head also serves in the broader administrative team of the Division of Agriculture.
