The College: The College of Education and Health Professions offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level with more than 3,100 students pursuing coursework both on-campus and off-campus. The College is comprised of academic units based in six buildings on the Fayetteville campus with academic centers in Little Rock and Hot Springs. More than 200 faculty and staff are helping the College achieve its three broad strategic goals: excellence in teaching, research and service; growth in enrollment and increased diversity; and increased public and private support.
The Department:
The Department of Education Reform is one of six academic units in the college and was recently created with a $20 million endowed gift. The mission of the department is to advance education and economic development by focusing on the improvement of academic achievement in elementary and secondary schools. Comprehensive and integrated efforts focusing on teaching, innovative research, the dissemination of knowledge, state-or-the-art practices, and practical hands-on education programs are being implemented in five priority areas: (a) teacher quality, (b) leadership, (c) policy, (d) accountability/transparency, and (e) school choice.
University and Location:
The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, serves as the major center of liberal and professional education and as the primary land-grant campus in the state. It is Arkansas’ major source of theoretical and applied research and the provider of a wide range of public services to people throughout the state and nation. Fayetteville is located in the beautiful Ozarks Mountains in the Northwest corner of the state with an approximate metropolitan population in excess of 250,000 residents. The city and area have been featured in numerous publications as a very desirable and economical place to live and most recently was listed by Money magazine as one of the “100 Best Places to Live.”
Annual Salary:
This is a 9-month, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and background. Contingent on available funding and demand, an additional summer appointment is possible.
Description:
The College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, invites nominations and applications a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Department of Education Reform.
Starting Date:
The anticipated starting date is August 18, 2008 (Fall 2008 Semester), but an earlier date is negotiable.
Minimum Requirements:
The individual selected for this position will be expected to possess the following required qualifications:
1. An earned doctorate from a nationally recognized university in Economics, Education, Political Science, Public Policy or a related field;
2. Documented evidence of potential to conduct research resulting in refereed publications and presentations, particularly in area of race relations and education reform;
3. Evidence of the ability to be an effective teacher at the graduate level and to teach qualitative research methods with a particular expertise in conducting focus groups;
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings to policymakers, the media, and the general public; and
5. A record of accomplishments within the area of education reform focused on leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
1. Proven ability to generate and lead large-scale, externally-funded, reform-oriented research and evaluation projects; and
2. Demonstrated ability to secure external funding to support education reform projects.
Job Duties:
The individual selected to fill this position will be expected to conduct research and disseminate information related to education policy, with special emphasis on the interaction of race relations and education reform. Specific duties and responsibilities will include:
(1) teach graduate courses in education reform, including qualitative research methods;
(2) direct graduate student independent research and dissertations;
(3) advise graduate students in the Education Reform Ph.D. program;
(4) conduct research resulting in professional presentations and refereed publications;
(5) pursue external-funded education reform research projects;
(6) engage in leadership development activities in the Delta region of Arkansas;
(7) participate in public service and professional organizations; and (8) engage in service activities at the department, college and university levels.
