PCT position in the Resource Pool require that you have at least 2 years minimum direct patient care experience in a hospital setting within the past year. Pay for these positions are higher than our other PCT positions because of the added criteria for the Resource Pool.
Position Summary:
The Patient Care Technician assists in performing delegated patient care activities including activities of daily living and basic nursing care procedures as well as identified competencies required in the assigned patient care unit. Performs other related duties as assigned. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. The Patient Care Technician position can be divided into three positions depending upon the number of skill sets acquired. The identified skill sets are further clarified at the end of this document.
1. Some units in BHS will be able to utilize PCT III's based upon the amount of skills utilized in each department.
2. Some departments will use PCT I the employee will only be working in one of the skill sets identified in the job description for PCT's on a regular basis.
3. Some departments will use PCT III's the employee will be working in at least three of the identified skill sets identified in the job description for PCT's on a regular basis.
4. Behavioral Health will utilize a skill set named BHS Tech. This skill set will require the employee to be proficient and working regularly in at least 2 skill sets listed below.
Essential Functions:
Other duties may be assigned. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.
All activities are performed under the direction of a Registered Nurse following Medical Center patient care standards. Assists patients with activities of daily living as patient needs require. Provides basic care in a timely manner respectful of the age and cultural needs of the patient. Performs required procedures skillfully with respect for Human Dignity. Demonstrates concern for the overall comfort of the patient. Uses infection control techniques in all patient care activities. Explains all care procedures to the patient/family prior to performing the care. Accurately documents information in the appropriate place regarding patient care and/or response to care. Immediately communicates patient's needs condition changes observations and responses to the RN. Demonstrates the core values of the Medical Center in all interactions. Maintains identified skill/competencies. Demonstrates stewardship in the use of resources: equipment supplies and time. Demonstrates commitment to ensuring patient/family satisfaction with their Medical Center experience. Actively participates as a member of the patient care team.
Patient Care Assistant/Certified Nurse Assistant specific duties include:
-Prepares equipment and aids nursing staff during treatment and examination of patient.
-Keeps RN informed of pertinent patient data and findings.
-Takes temperature pulse blood pressure respiration rates and food and fluid intake and output as directed.
-Prepares rooms sterile instruments equipment and/or supplies for surgery/treatment. Assists in surgery/treatment as assigned.
-Provides nursing care to patients under the direction of an RN in a manner which promotes quality care.
ECG Monitoring specific duties include:
-Monitors heart rhythm patterns of patients to detect abnormal pattern variances.
-Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern current pattern and prior variances.
-Continuously observes electrocardiographs documents interpretation at prescribed intervals and in the event of dysrhythmias or rhythm changes.
-Detects and notifies RN and/or other appropriate personnel immediately in the event of life-threatening dysrhythmias.
Health Unit Coordination specific duties include:
-Performs receptionist duties maintains inventory of designated supplies and utilizes computer extensively.
-Responsible for initiating and maintaining unit and medical records. Responds promptly to all individuals seeking information.
-Keeps nurse in charge updated regarding unit activity problems or complaints.
-Performs clerical duties to assist the health team in providing quality patient care.
-Coordinates activities to maintain an organized and efficient department.
Intensive Care specific duties include:
-Transports patients.
-Prepares rooms sterile instruments equipment and/or supplies for surgery/treatment or procedures. Assists in surgery/treatment or procedures as assigned.
-Provides nursing care to patients under the direction of an RN in a manner which promotes quality care.
This will include but not be limited to the assisting in achieving hemostasis by use of either manual pressure or hemostasis devices.
-Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern current pattern and prior variances.
-Observes electrocardiographs documents interpretation at prescribed intervals and in the event of dysrhythmias or rhythm changes.
-Notifies RN and/or other appropriate personnel immediately in the event of life-threatening dysrhythmias.
-Develops Cine films which will include operating film processors.
-Utilizes the nursing process of assessment establishing goals planning interventions evaluating and re-evaluating care.
Burn Care specific duties include:
-Perform delegated patient care tasks in a timely and efficient manner, under the guidance of a registered nurse including dressing changes, hydrotherapy, ECG monitoring and phlebotomy.
-Collect accurate patient data and communicate all pertinent patient care data to the appropriate RN accurately and promptly.
-Complete unit related activities such as transcription of orders; computer data entry; receptionist duties and phone courtesies.
-Maintain unit readiness through procurement of equipment and stocking supplies.
Emergency Care specific duties include:
-Demonstrates skill in phlebotomy technique and basic specimen collection.
-Performs unit related tasks: procurement and preparation of instruments and equipment, restocking of supplies, maintaining unit cleanliness, etc., as indicated. Cleans patient area and equipment.
-Assists in triage when volume is high. Observes patients in waiting room, reassures patients waiting, assists RN with collection of specimens.
-Transports all noncritical admits to specified unit. Assists RN transporting critical patients.
-Assists ER Code Blue team with procedures, specimen collection, equipment, and supplies as necessary.
Behavioral Health specific duties include:
-Phlebotomy
-EKG
-Transportation of patients
-Activity Director
Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); with one to three months related experience and/or training. Must have one of the following: certification as a nurse assistant; completion of a hospital provided training course; completion of a basic nursing course; completion of Emergency Medical Technician training. CNA required for placement on Skilled Nursing Units. Students in other health care related majors will be considered.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Certified Nurse Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician or previous Nursing Student. Other health care related major students may be considered.
