Job Description:
Directs and monitors daily operations of the unit assigned. Prepares and enters a balanced staffing schedule according to the specified times established by the Central Staffing Office. Keep changes updated in electronic system in a timely fashion. Perform time keeping functions for the unit ensuring that time entered is correct. Monitors and maintains fully operational equipment and supplies. Submits proposal to Administrative Director for new or additional equipment changes in par values and information regarding non-functioning equipment sent off the unit. Observes for dress code violations and enforces policy. Prepares implements and monitors at least one ongoing and two quarterly performance improvement plans (i.e. fall risk patient education documentation or pain medication pre-post rating using a scale). This must be shared with staff and documentation results posted.Rounds on all patients daily and does a satisfaction survey that consists of five questions:1. Have you been informed of the day’s activities for your care with questions being answered? (Education of the patient)2. Have all care givers introduced themselves to you? (Staff awareness)3. Any questions or concerns regarding plans and medical care post hospitalization? (CM consult)4. Are you nutritional needs being met? How is the food? (Dietary consult)5. Do you have any questions or concerns I might assist you with?On subsequent days’ meetings with the patient:1. Any new comments or concerns today - activities/education discharge planning nutrition or anything else of concern to you today.2. Provide follow-up to patient expressing any concerns from the prior day.Meet with Case Manager and RN care giver early morning prior to bed meeting regarding patient status.1. obs/inpt2. # days patient at hospital and proposed discharge date3. identified discharge needs4. status of prep for discharge5. any patient concerns identifiedAs rounding does a clinical area walk about to ensure safe environment and that (see tool) JCAHO standards are being met. Prepare shift assignments for nursing staff with appropriate patients. Educates Charge Nurses on this duty.Prepares a daily assignment of required checks:1. codecart2. omni cell3. expiration dates on meds4. refrigerator checks5. lunch breaks with buddy coverage6. other areas of deficiencies for the unitCollaborates with the PDS to identify educational needs to ensure competence of nursing personnel.Monitors and maintains records that demonstrate these competencies. These include: licensure annual and biannual requirements such as CPR ACLS and unit-specific competencies etc.Creates and facilitates a unit-based leadership team that investigates evidence-based nursing practice and prepares an implementation plan to be presented at the Nursing Executive Council monthly.Other duties of this unit-based council that need to be present at the Nursing Executive Council are unit-based PI results event report trending community leadership and financial endeavors.All of these items will be reported through the Administrative Directors.Conducts participates in and records Interdisciplinary Team Conferences on all patients a minimum of three times per week. Team includes Clinical Manager RN Pharmacy Respiratory Dietician Physicians Chaplain and any other guest as needed to provide for the care of the patient across the continuum.Mentors and monitors a documentation team on the unit that develops a plan for routine chart audits that meet JCAHO standards and that documentation is conducive to creating no questions in a court of law.Organizational Leadership: Demonstrates Vision1. Demonstrates initiative in ensuring a process of continuous performance improvement.2. Leads staff in a dynamic process of questioning studying and generating creative ideas to improve nursing services. Communicates vision.3. Contributes as a member of the patient operations leadership team in order to improve the quality of services to all customers of the Medical Center.4. Develops methods that will position nursing services to meet current and future needs.5. Identifies critical success factors which support the organizations’ strategic plan.Organizational Stewardship: Demonstrates Competence1. Plans proactively to ensure the sound fiscal management of identified patient care units and the organization: budget preparation analysis and monitoring.2. Enlists staffs enthusiastic commitment to quality patient care services.3. Plans to meet the competency development needs of staff for identified patient populations.4. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation entities.5. Demonstrates commitment to the mission of Via Christi by maintaining healthy relationships with all constituents.Communicates and implements vision for the Service Line in concert with the strategic plan of the Medical Center.Implements a comprehensive marketing plan for regional markets.Implements a comprehensive pricing/reimbursement package in collaboration with Financial Services in order to attract customers and increase revenue.Ensures best practices within services provided across the Service Line continuum. Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Demonstrated progressive leadership experience in Management of at least three years. Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas.
