Job Description:
Position Summary: The major focus of this position is the supervision of the patient care environment in order to support the care team in the provision of patient/family care on an identified patient care unit/s.
Primary customers include the staff and patients/families. As a member of the leadership team monitors and maintains clinical standards of care and maintains shift accountability for the assurance of appropriate staffing resources for the provision of quality patient care on an identified unit. Acts as the leadership representative on site when the Unit Director is unavailable.
Demonstrates knowledge of and delivers care in accordance with the Kansas Nurse Practice Act. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Participates in maintaining staff competencies through education mentoring and role modeling.

Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.
1. Proactively matches existing resources throughout the shift for the identified unit/s.
2. Plans for the provision of care by making patient care assignments.
3. Seeks ways to provide patient care that supports staff and maintains a therapeutic environment.
4. Demonstrates clinical expertise in provision of care in the clinical specialty of assigned unit with the ability to perform all functions of the staff RN role that is age appropriate and culturally specific.
5. Provides consultation to staff on clinical care issues.
6. Provides input to the Unit Director in budget preparation/monitoring and the identification of workload variability to predict and plan for appropriate staffing to enhance productivity/efficiency and maintain quality care.
7. Identifies ways to improve customer service streamline care processes and lower costs.
8. Monitors quality of care and any problems/concerns that would impede quality care by interacting with patients/families and monitoring care provider's competency on an ongoing basis.
9. Reports information regarding personnel issues according to standards including mentoring coaching and evaluation and documentation of performance including performance concerns.
10. Works closely with and communicates effectively with all staff to support staff retention.
11. Maintains a work environment that is highly supportive of a professional role.
12. Maintains positive relationships with physicians collaborating to problem solve and improve patient care.
13. Demonstrates the ability to reduce as well as manage risks to reduce and or prevent crises.
14. Performs skillfully in life threatening emergencies including matching demands and resources during crises situations.

Management Responsibilities: Is responsible for the overall direction coordination and evaluation of a specific shift on a nursing unit/s. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Supports the Unit Director in interviewing and hiring employees; training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and mentoring/coaching employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience: BSN from a four-year college or university preferred. Two years experience in a clinical role required. Extensive clinical experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Certificates Licenses Registrations: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Current RN license for the State of Kansas. Unit specific certifications and competencies.
