Job Description:
• Under general supervision, the Certified Histologic Technician performs high quality embedding, microtomy and histochemical staining of irreplaceable human tissues and produces slides which are delivered to pathologists for diagnosis of disease.
• Performs proper orientation of surgically removed human tissue prior to embedding and, subsequently, high quality embedding to ensure that the tissue is placed on the slide in such a way as to allow accurate diagnosis and that the embedding process preserves the tissue structure.
• Performs advanced embedding techniques on cylindrical, tubular or stratified tissues according to written procedure to adequately preserve tissue structures.
• Cuts uniform, high quality sections at the routine thicknesses of 4-6 microns, as well as at less than 4 microns to facilitate accurate diagnosis by the pathologist.
• Cuts "level through blocks" at six levels, ending with tissue thickness less than .05 cm to facilitate accurate diagnosis.
• Prepares stains and performs routine H & E stains, as well as special staining techniques using substantive, adjective, progressive and impregnation mechanisms to produce stained tissue conducive to accurate diagnosis.
• Works closely with pathologists to determine proper microtomy techniques, as well as their individual staining preferences to ensure pathologist satisfaction with the final product.
• Assists in inventory control by monitoring supply levels and informing the Lead Histologic Technician when supplies are needed to ensure adequate supply levels.
• Participates in the improvement of operational functions of the department.
• Establishes communication and respectful relationships with all disciplines.
• Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
• Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of care and practices identifying opportunities for improvement through collaboration.
• Demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge of age-related factors to department specific population.
Job Requirements:
• Required licensure: Certification as a Certified Histologic Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or CAHEA approved equivalent registry.
• Education required: Sufficient to qualify for the Certified Histologic Technician Registry Exam (usually 60 college hours).
• Skills or knowledge required and/or preferred:
- Knowledge of anatomy.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Demonstrated skill in tissue embedding, microtomy, and histochemical staining.
