PLANETARIUM MANAGER CULTURAL & HERITAGE COMMISSION - Cultural and Heritage Commission Job Grade: 15 CHC Salary: $35421.31 Description: POSITION DESCRIPTION PLANETARIUM MANAGER SUMMARY: The Planetarium Manager, under limited supervision, researches, purchases and presents planetarium programs, large format films, and other science-based programs (astronomy, energy, environmental science, etc) for a full-dome planetarium; develops, coordinates/presents related events to complement CHM mission; coordinates with Education and other departments for education and special events; provides expertise to the Museum in information technologies as time allows. Works a Tuesday-Saturday schedule. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties include but are not limited to: 1. Researches, purchases, edits (when needed) and presents regular planetarium programs for school groups and the general public, including programming, development and production of on line components and shows; and related technological functions. 2. Develops and executes special programs based on internationalastronomical events and programs with an astronomy / biodiversity / environmental science theme; coordinates public telescope viewings and other off-hours educational programs, on and off campus; works in coordination with other staff to develop and presentsuch programs. 3. Serves as coordinator for the Carolina Skygazers astronomy club. 4. Working with other education staff members, may develop and present science classes and programs (astronomy-based) for public and school groups as needed. 5. Serves as a resource for the news media and the public for planetarium programs and astronomical events. 6. Responsible for Share Point master calendar entries, planning of short and long range programs for marketing,departmental records, program evaluations, budgeting, and all other standard duties. 7. Works with advancement department to identify and assist with grant and sponsorship opportunities. 8. Acts as consultant to other departments regarding information technology (subjects and problems) as time permits. 9. Performs other duties as required within the scope of responsibility. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university with significant background in technology, science education, and/or astronomy; three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and educational publications. Ability to adaptand edit packagedplanetarium scripts, lesson plans and other educational materials that meet the needs of the learner. Ability to effectively interpret and present scientific and astronomical concepts in three dimensions to a wide range of ages from preschool through adult. Attention to detail, planning and organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task are helpful to this job. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply and teach the concepts of algebra, trigonometry and geometry within the planetarium setting. Ability to calculate figures and percentages and work within budgetary guidelines. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to conceive and plan in a multidimensional format utilizing both auditory, visual and computer skills. Ability to render spatial and scientific concepts understandable for the general public. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid drivers license. Active membership in professional organizations (International Planetarium Society and Southeastern Planetarium Association).
