DETENTION OFFICER - Detention Center Job Grade: 9 Salary: $30798.91 Description: NOTE: NOTE: 3-YEAR DRIVING RECORD, COPY OF DRIVERS LICENSE, SOCIAL SECURITY CARD, HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, AND DD-214 (If applicable) MUST BE SUMITTED WITH APPLICATION YORK COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS DESCRIPTION 2005 CLASS TITLE: DETENTION OFFICER I DETENTION CENTER SHERIFFS OFFICE GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS The purpose of the class is to perform various security procedures and activities on assigned shift, ensuring that security is maintained at all times for the protection of staff, inmates and the general public; to prepare and submit records and reports as required, and to perform related corrections work as required. This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor. ESSENTIAL TASKS The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Maintains a high level of security and safety awareness at all times, ensuring the safety and security of inmates, staff and the general public through the proper enforcement of administrative and operational policies and procedures. Performs a variety of security duties associated with post assignment, which may include booking inmates, overseeing initial showering and issuing supplies, escorting inmates / assisting with inmate movement within the facility, controlling and accounting for inmates property, patrolling assigned areas, etc. Observes and interacts with inmates to detect security problems; maintains order and discipline among inmates; assists in coordinating daily activities and programs involving inmates and visitors. Monitors security cameras. Performs facility and cell inspections; determines security status. Supervises inmate meals, visitation, recreation and exercise, educational activities, telephone privileges, counseling, court visits, and medical attention; issues clean clothing and personal hygiene items; administers medications to inmates as prescribed. Maintains accurate inmate head counts and monitors location of inmates at all times. Provides the transportation of inmates to court, medical facilities and other locations as necessary. Participates in the management of and provides leadership to inmates in emergencies or other life/safety-threatening situations. Performs general housekeeping duties. Keeps all officers and supervisors informed of daily incidents and activities. Performs duties of other officers as necessary. May serve on the response team. Operates a vehicle, firearms, restraining devices, security equipment and alarm systems; operates a computer and basic office equipment; exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of all equipment. Prepares and submits various records, reports and forms as required. Attends training, meetings, seminars, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills. Receives, reviews and responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility. Performs general clerical work as required, including attending meetings, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, maintaining lists and logs, etc. INVOLVEMENT WITH DATA, PEOPLE, AND THINGS DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, examining or evaluating data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information. PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants. INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction and experience, such as firearms, restraining devices, protective equipment, security equipment; also involves handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment. COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving. MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in jail management or a closely related field. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must possess basic jail certification; may be required to possess firearms certification and maintain proficiency in the use and maintenance of firearms. Must possess CPR and First Aid certifications. Must possess a valid state drivers license. May be required to possess or obtain other certifications as deemed necessary by the department head. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires over six months and up to and including one year. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of driving, walking, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which involves the lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds), and occasionally heavy objects (100 pounds or more). While performing corrections work, must be able to defend one(~)s self from assault and to restrain suspects of varying weights. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, fumes and/or noxious odors, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence. SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception, depth perception, texture perception, odor perception.
