GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The purpose of the class is to perform technical work conducting cursory health checks on animals in the custody of the York County Animal Shelter; to gather samples for and conduct laboratory analyses; to assist the veterinarian with medical procedures, and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Examines animals in the custody of the York County Animal Shelter for disease, injuries, parasites and other possible problems.
Evaluates and treats sick and injured animals as necessary in the absence of the veterinarian.
Collects samples for and conducts laboratory tests as directed; prepares reports of test results and provides results to the veterinarian and/or other division staff as requested.
Administers and monitors anesthesia to animals, administers medications, and performs euthanasia as directed.
Vaccinates, de-worms, bathes and grooms adoptable animals.
Maintains medical records on shelter animals.
Assists division staff with various technical skills such as disease identification; provides related training as needed.
Maintains the sanitation and cleanliness of the surgery center and related equipment; maintains sterilization of medicine; takes inventory of medical supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
Assists in cleaning shelter facilities, and assists shelter keepers as needed.
Prepares / completes various forms, reports, records, correspondence, etc., as required by the department, County and/or other agencies.
Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from the public in areas of responsibility.
Supervises the duties of assigned inmate workers as assigned; offers instruction, advice and assistance as needed.
Performs routine clerical duties as required, including but not limited to entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc.
Operates a computer, basic office equipment, medical equipment and instruments, laboratory equipment and instruments, x-ray equipment, diagnostic instruments, incinerator, etc.; exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of equipment.
Attends training, meetings, conferences, workshops, etc., as necessary to maintain job knowledge, skills and required certifications; maintains an awareness of new products, technologies, trends and advances in the profession.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:
Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, examining or evaluating data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:
Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction and experience, such as medical equipment, laboratory equipment.

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires using basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes, and/or computing discounts and interest rates.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires doing specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in veterinary technology or a closely related field.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess a valid state driver’s license & state certification as a veterinary technician.
Must possess valid CPR & First Aid Certification

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over two years and up to and including four years.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, climbing, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception, odor perception, texture perception, depth perception.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS:
Responsible for actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting co-workers, patients, customers, clients or others in the general public; works in a moderately fluid environment with guidelines and rules, but frequent variations from the routine.
