General Summary

Under the general supervision of the Vice President-Operations, manages all pharmaceutical activities throughout the organization to ensure that patients` pharmaceutical needs are effectively met.  Establishes policies, procedures, standards and objectives for the provision of services and coordinates with other departments to provide maximum level of services to patients and hospital staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are essential job accountablilities
  1. Directs, coordinates and supervises all of the following pharmaceutical activities across the organization:
    • Distributive functions including the purchasing, receiving, storing, compounding and dispensing of all medications.
    • Clinical pharmacy consultative services across the organization, including coordination of the pharmacy residency program with the pharmacy residency program director.
    • Through collaboration with organizational safety professionals, consults on all medication use safety-related processes and initiatives.
    • In coordination with the organizational information technology professionals, implements, develops, and maintains pharmacy information systems and related equipment.
    • All quality assessment-related activities related to all pharmacy-related activities and the organizations medication use process in order to ensure the delivery of quality pharmacy services for all patients.
    • Pharmaceutical product purchasing and inventory control to meet patient needs.

2.   Consults with and advises medical and/or other healthcare professionals regarding utilization of and/or pharmacokinetic profiles of pharmaceuticals.

3.   Ensures compliance with all medication use-related regulations and accreditation standards through collaboration with organizational regulatory compliance  professionals and other departments/service lines/entities.

4.    Continually reviews existing procedures and systems and makes recommendations for improvement where appropriate.

5.    Develops and recommends appropriate budget(s) for area(s) of responsibility and ensures that area(s) operates within budget.

6.   Collaborates with the Institutional Review Board by directing the pharmaceutical component of all organizational research efforts.     

7.   Ensures proper controls and records of narcotics and other controlled substances as required by state and federal law.

8.   Develops and determines priorities and monitors status of special projects on an ongoing basis.

9.   Maintains competence related to the latest developments concerning newly marketed drugs or the latest pharmaceutical research developments reported.

10.  Establishes and monitors charging system for all items dispensed from pharmacy.

Department Description:

The Pharmacy Department is committed to quality and safety. Our training program offers residents the ability to be mentored in an environment which promotes gaining experience in providing and overseeing all aspects of hospital based pharmacy practice. Pharmacists working within the Pharmacy Department participate in providing specialist level care through our work within our Pain Team, Nutrition Support and Anticoagulation Clinics.

Completion of 5 year program from accredited school of pharmacy
