 Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Aerospace / Mechanical Engineer.

Responsibilities
Assist in design, analysis, and testing of advanced technologies for future high-speed weapon systems and their integration with various vehicle platforms (manned and unmanned air vehicles, aircraft, reentry vehicles, ships, ground vehicles).

Duties include 
1) Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary studies to determine applicability of various technologies to high-speed vehicle development. Manage and perform design, experimental, and computational studies of advanced technologies. Provide technical and programmatic oversight on high-speed vehicle projects.
2) Perform design, multidisciplinary analysis, and testing of advanced projectile technologies integrated within complex, conceptual electromagnetic launcher systems. Assess ship-based and ground-vehicle integration issues. Support associated test activities as necessary.
3) Assess and improve gas-surface interaction models for charring ablators, improve modeling capability for atmospheric reentry applications. Perform uncertainty analyses to assess impact of physical models on heat transfer and aerodynamic performance prediction.
4) Develop engineering and analysis plans and proposals to address requirements for advanced weapon system concepts and their integration with various vehicle platforms (e.g., manned and unmanned air vehicles, aircraft, re-entry vehicles).
5) Document analysis/engineering results, prepare technical reports and briefings, meet sponsor deliverables.
6) Lead and/or contribute to planning activities for future projects and initiatives.

Qualifications
Required - MS in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering. Experience (5+ years) in precision engagement weapon system design and development with a focus on aerodynamics and/or flight dynamics. Experience with experimental testing (ground- and flight-based) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of vehicle components and integrated systems. Demonstrated project management and leadership skills, including research and development efforts. Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills. Demonstrated initiative, motivation, flexibility, and interest in working in a team environment.

Desired - PhD in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering. Experience in advanced vehicle design and development. Technical experience ranging from basic and applied research (with scholarly publications) to engineering of developmental systems. Ability to work independently and as a leader or member of a small technology development team, as necessary. Experience with the following tools: CFD++, Gridgen, Tecplot, CAD (Solidworks or Pro/E), MATLAB, PRODAS. Familiarity with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) modeling. General programming skills (e.g., C, Fortran). Current/prior Secret clearance or ability to rapidly obtain Secret clearance.

Special Work Conditions
Local and long distance travel as necessary to contractor, government, operational, and test sites.
