Electrical Design Engineer

Job Location: Laurel, Maryland

Job Type: Full-Time / Regular

Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer.

Responsibilities

To provide professional-level skills for the design, estimation, and documentation of electrical engineered systems for construction and renovation projects. Apply the knowledge of electrical distribution systems from low voltage up to 33 KV, including substations and building distribution systems. Develop cost estimates for labor, material, and other resources to accomplish electrical construction and renovation projects using PC-based programs. Apply technical expertise in problem solving for electrical construction and renovation projects. Review drawings prepared by consultants. Meet with customers in order to gather requirements, perform field surveys and document existing conditions of electrical equipment and devices. Coordinate with other design professionals in a team environment. Consult with customers in problem identification/problem solving for electrical issues.

Qualifications
Required:

B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience. Experience gained through a minimum of five years of electrical design including a background in power, lighting, communications, and fire alarm systems. Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and the International Energy Conservation Code. CAD knowledge gained through a minimum of two years of experience or a combination of classroom instruction and experience. Proficiency with PC-based desktop applications, including Windows (Spreadsheets, Word, etc.). Must have effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and within a team environment. Must also have strong problem-solving and communication skills (both oral and written). Applicants selected will be subject to a driving record evaluation.

Desired:

Experience gained through a minimum of five years of electrical systems in the construction field. Knowledge/experience with computer-based estimating systems (RSMeans or similar).

Special Work Conditions
Usual working hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Requires the operation of APL vehicles. Occasional travel and overtime may be required. Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, roofs, etc.; inspect below desks, ductwork, pipes, etc.; and lift 50 lbs.

Security
