Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking aAssociate Communications Systems Engineer for Government Applications.

Responsibilities:

Assume a technical position as a communications systems engineer supporting various government sponsors, such as DoD, FAA, DHS, and intelligence communities. Communications systems include wireless line-of-sight and satellite communications systems and networks. Position available with the communications and systems networking group (VCS) within the Information Systems Branch(VIB). Typical tasks (with notional percentage of time) include: Support end-to-end communications systems engineering activities, including system design, test, and evaluation activities. This could include support to critical needs and capability assessments, early conceptual studies, trade studies, requirements and architecture solutions, and equipment integration, test planning, and test execution.Perform analyses and/or modeling and simulation (M&S) to evaluate the performance of specific communication systems. Assist in developing communication system emulations.Provide systems engineering solutions to advance global connectivity (e.g Global Information Grid (GIG)) development. Advance and apply new technologies to enable evolution of existing communications systems to higher data rates, IP based solutions, and greater interoperability. May involve diverse disciplines including physical layer & networking architectures, transport protocols, QoS performance, antennas, and RF engineering.Prepare and present presentations for working groups and sponsors. Participate in technical meetings, review engineering memoranda, and participate in problem solving sessions as part of a contractor/Government technical team.

Qualifications:

Required: BS/MS in engineering, physical sciences,computer science, mathematics, or equivalent. Training in communications systems and/or government systems. Demonstrated strong teamwork and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Familiarity with government community, sponsors, and programs. Must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Desired:MS/PhD in engineering or computer science. 2+ years experience in government communication and network systems. Recent knowledge of DoD, FAA, DHS, and/or intelligence community, sponsors, and programs.

Security:

Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
