Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Network Security Specialist.
Responsibilities
Member of the enterprise network security team responsible for monitoring the security systems and responding to security events as appropriate to the situation.
Monitor first tier level network intrusion and detection consoles, and analyze the information presented for signs of suspicious activity. Take appropriate action to stop any suspicious activity identified from continuing to run on the unclassified network. Escalate unidentified suspicious activity to the Senior Security Engineers if required. Record changes made in the change management system, and write a shift report on all security events occurring during their security watch. Maintain current knowledge of security vulnerabilities and advisories (e.g. read daily blogs). Configure, maintain, and monitor network intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and other security devices. System administration. Apply UNIX and Windows OS upgrades and system patches as directed.
Qualifications
Required:
A minimum of 60 credit hours towards an IT-related Bachelor's degree, or equivalent years of related work experience, and three years of experience in an IT network operations support role. Ability to work independently to research and resolve security incidences. Perform system administration tasks on Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems. Working knowledge of TCP/IP, network operations and monitoring systems. Ability to multitask and make good decisions, determine priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work with customers and as part of a small team.
Desired:
BS/BA in computer science or related area. Training or coursework in network penetration testing, intrusion detection, hacker techniques, and forensic. Knowledge if network security trends and best practices. One or more current certifications: GIAC, CCNA, MCSE, CISSP.
Special Work Conditions
This is a Regular Part-Time position for 24 hours per week.
Required work hours are:
Saturday 6:30 am - 7:00 pm and
Sunday 6:30 am - 7:00 pm
Occasional after hours support may be required to address critical tasks.
Security
Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
