Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a A2D Section Supervisor ¿ Applied Spectroscopy and Remote Sensing for EO/IR Systems & Technologies Group.

Responsibilities
Supervise the Applied Spectroscopy and Remote Sensing Section, develop and execute projects in active and passive EO/IR remote sensing, modeling and validation of light propagation through various media, laser applications including high energy lasers, and applied research into light/matter interaction and material properties, e.g. absorption spectroscopy and scattering, in support of multiple APL business areas.

Duties:
Section supervision: lead and supervise a section of 8 professional staff, interaction with program/project or technical leads for tasks, development and prioritization of tasks, staff development, staff allocation, section meetings, and performance appraisals.
Technical: lead and contribute to the aforementioned technical task areas of the section, as well as to group tasks outside the section.
New business: Support or lead the development of new instrument concepts, measurement techniques, scientific analysis, and modeling efforts. Such initiatives will correspond to a variety of research fields, including but not limited to both active and passive EO/IR remote sensing, light/matter interactions, material properties, and optical propagation. Tasks will span multiple APL business areas. Develop and market proposals to both external and internal customers.
Group management: support task planning, strategic planning, capital and facility planning, and coordination of assignments across the group.
Document task results via memoranda, briefings, conference proceedings, and journal articles.

Qualifications
Required:
M.S. degree in physics, electrical engineering, optics, or equivalent. At least 8 years of experience in at least one of the following: developing active or passive EO/IR remote sensing techniques or instruments, analytical prediction or experimental validation of EO/IR system performance or related phenomenology, investigation of light or beam propagation through various media, or investigation into the optical properties of materials. Demonstrated skill at leading small (3-5 people) technical teams. Proficient with Matlab or other scientific analysis software.

Desired:
Ph.D. degree in physics, electrical engineering, optics, or equivalent. At least 15 years of experience in three or more of the following: developing active or passive EO/IR remote sensing techniques or instruments, analytical prediction or experimental validation of EO/IR system performance or related phenomenology, investigation of light or beam propagation through various media, or investigation into the optical properties of materials. Ability to track, prioritize, and support upwards of 5 concurrent projects involving a core team of engineers. Experienced at working across multiple business areas. Successful track record at generating proposals and obtaining funding.

Special Work Conditions
Need to periodically travel, both locally and out-of-state.

Security
