Position Overview:
Collects blood specimens (capillary and venous) processes and stores samples. Also assists with filing billing and other office duties. May also perform a limited number of bench tests in the clinical laboratory after proper training. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES JOB DUTIES AND PROJECTS:

QUALITY AND QUANTITY: 


1. Obtains adequate and timely specimens (venous capillary ) using appropriate techniques and Standard Operating Procedures for identification safety collection and communication. 
2. Uses Standard Operating Procedures for handling and preservation of specimens. 
3. Contributes to development and maintenance of operating procedures for sample collection and processing. 
4. Demonstrate a willingness to help new employees obtain skills. 
5. Maintains rigid accuracy in the identification and reporting of numbers and names. Dates times and initials all specimens collected. 
6. Demonstrates knowledge of established department policies for infection control and personal safety precautions: a. Handwashing b. Safety apparel c. Disinfection of countertops and equipment d. Non aerosol producing use of centrifuge e. Use of safety devices f. Prohibition of eating drinking application of cosmetics in working areas. g. Task related precautions 
7. Documents work related accidents/illnesses and channels through established guidelines. 
8. Unpacks/distributes incoming supplies. 
9. Makes judicious use of reagents/supplies. 
10. Takes responsibility for initiating reorder of supplies as needed. 
11. Keeps Director informed of changes progress and problem areas. 
12. Participates in quality assessment procedures. 
13. Demonstrates knowledge of established procedures for maintenance of logs files referral services and retrieves results when needed. 
14. May perform simple laboratory tests with proper training and under close supervision. Can not report any results without a co-signature of a technologist. 
15. Maintains specimen collection tray and phlebotomy areas in a clear and orderly manner. 

KNOWLEDGE OF JOB: 

16. Completes in a timely fashion specific responsibilities for scheduled work area without reminder. (phlebotomist stocking supplies unpacking supplies reporting of results cleaning work area and assisting technologists in bench area. 
17. Evaluates requested procedures to determine appropriate specimen collection (uses appropriate sources of information and selects proper containers and timing sequences). 
18. Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to hospital patient isolation requirements infection control policies. 
19. Demonstrates knowledge of established lab policies for handling storage and disposal of infectious or potentially hazardous material. 
20. Routinely checks "R and I" manual for recent additions and documents by date and initials attesting to knowledge of the contents of the document. 
21. May file and assist with clerical duties such as charting typing and answering the telephone.

28. Demonstrates the ability to remain friendly and cooperative during all working conditions.

32. Willing to adjust schedule in conjunction with the process of Department Scheduling and needs.

34. Demonstrate a cost-conscious attitude in time usage and makes the best use of time.

Education Requirements:

High school graduation or equivalent. 

Experience Requirements:
Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.

None required.
