Position Overview:
The Medical Transcriber is responsible and accountable for all medical reports and letters. Typing speed must be 60-80 words per minute and reports must be 95% error free based on no more than 2 mistakes per full typed page. All transcribers are responsible for being able to type any report; these include H&P's EOT's consults progress notes statistical reports from any physician. Must be able to use dictation/transcription software and hardware competently. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES JOB DUTIES AND PROJECTS: 

TRANSCRIPTION: 
1. Responsible for transcribing all work types regardless of dictating physician. 
2. Prioritizes workload during periods of high stress multi-demand situations according to established policy and procedure. 
3. Efficiently uses word processing software and dictation software for highest productivity and highest quality work. 
4. Assures correct spelling of medical terms and other words; uses accurate punctuation and all available tools for accuracy of work product (chart spell checker PDR etc.). 
5. Accurately transcribes patient identification and physician identification on all reports. 
6. Verifies accuracy of patient information such as name date of service and date of birth. Understands and is able to use any aspect of the computer and software programs needed to locate patient information. 
7. Types exactly what physician says due to high volume of heavily accented physicians in institution; however will double check with dictating physician if dictation is too difficult to understand. 
8. Submit proofs to physicians. Responsible for making all revisions and obtaining physician signature on all final copies. 
9. Transcribes routine letters or other documents relation to patient care or departmental needs as assigned. 
10. Saves all corrected reports for easy timely retrieval. 

DOCUMENTATION 
11. Prints "Table of Contents" at the end of each work - day according to policy and procedure. 
12. Makes appropriate number of copies per typed reports and distributes to in house physicians or mails to external physicians according to policy and procedure. 
13. Familiar with MSA and able to verify the E & M codes to support the need for proper documentation by physicians. 
14. Maintains an ongoing list of missing dictation for all physicians and submits list to them weekly. 

FILING/MAILING/OTHER DUTIES: 
15. Responsible for all filing of transcribed documents in the appropriate section of the cancer center charts according to the policy and procedure. 
16. Maintains a database of all external physicians with up-to-date mailing addresses. 
17. Maintains open lines of communication and good rapport with each physician. Assists with explaining the usage of dictation equipment and procedures as needed. 
18. Works well with other team members regarding shared workload. 

SUPPLY ORDERING: 
19. Responsible for compiling weekly supplies order for the Cancer Center. Assists nursing and radiation staff with ordering specialty items. 
20. Verifies receipt of each order. 

MEDICAL OFFICE ASSISTANT RESPONSIBILITIES (AS BACK UP): 
21. Picks up mail and distributes to appropriate individuals 
22. Answers phone and directs calls to appropriate staff or takes and relays messages in courteous and prompt manner. 
23. Greets visitors and patients in a friendly and courteous manner. 
24. Transports patients as necessary. 
25. Attends in-services staff meetings and other meetings as required.

Education Requirements:
High school graduate or equivalent. 

Experience Requirements:
Typing speed of at least 60 WPM. Medical terminology and experience with dictation equipment preferred. Prefer previous hospital or physician office experience. 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/ REGISTRATION:
None required. AAMT certification preferred.
