DIRECTOR SANE/SART

Shift: 8 Hour Day Shift / Hours: 40 FTE: 1

SUMMARY
A member of the professional staff who has 24 hour accountability for coordinating all aspects of the Sexual Assault Program including personnel resources and patient care activities within scope of control. Writes understands and implements all aspects of grant funding. Provides direct care to assault patients and serves as preceptor and trainer for other team members across the region as requested. Completes performance appraisals and disciplinary actions for assigned personnel. 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborates with assigned administrative representative to formulate strategic initiatives and provides specific guidelines for achieving agreed upon goals in line with the organizations strategic plan which include financial responsibility customer and employee satisfaction.
  • Team management with recruitment/selection and training of SANE providers and non clinical personnel.
  • Coaches develops and mentors staff to creatively provide a high level of service implement improvement encourage innovation and balance competing priorities.
  • Coordinates development and implementation for QI activities peer review process and case review of sexual assault medical/forensic evaluations.
  • Oversees maintenance of the on-call schedule for SANE/SART fills open on-call hours as needed when other staff is unavailable. Perform scheduled exams and follow-up exams as needed.
  • Responsible for development and management of SANE/SART budget including the grant process involving writing understanding and implementing aspects of grant funding.
  • Facilitate open communication with regular office staff meetings and encourages up to date information on the staff calendar.
  • Provides insightful flexible innovative management based upon employee participation in decision making.
  • Maintains a system that supports the seamless flow of patients through the continuum of care.
  • Maintains accountability to ensure all staff meets clinical competency requirements.
  • Prepares and conducts monthly grand rounds meetings coordinates and/or provids continuing education new information and encouraging open communication to identify/resolve problems for the team.
  • Complete performance appraisals for SANE/SART staff.
  • Disciplines/counsels SANE/SART staff and makes termination decisions.
  • Interfaces with law enforcement judicial systems advocate agencies and external support agencies associated with the care of the sexual assault victim. Promotes and demonstrates effective multidisciplinary team communication.
  • Leads and participates on Via Christi SANE/SART Advisory Board.
  • Ensures development updates and enforcement of written procedures protocols and standards.
  • Regularly interfaces with SANE/SART Program Medical Directors for questions challenges updates and case review.
  • Evaluates progress and outcomes gathered from patient satisfaction and advocate survey results.
  • Coordinates with SANE/SART Consultant and office staff education and information concerning the medical-forensic evaluation and the SANE/SART program to nursing staff medical staff physicians law enforcement advocates and judicial representatives on a local statewide and national level.
  • Acts as a resource for new information technical updates research and references to Medical Center and local personnel regional associates statewide contacts and nation wide affiliates as requested.
  • Interacts effectively with all customers while demonstrating a positive influence with all contacts. Responding to customer complaints in a timely manner.
  • Interacts with the media coordinates public speakers and press releases related to the program.
  • Provide medical/forensic post-mortem patient examinations as requested. Utilizes SANE/SART Consultant to assist in providing education and peer review of all post-mortem examinations completed by SANE/SART staff.
  • Provides testimony in court as needed and prepares SANE staff members for testimony locally and statewide.
  • Acts as a representative and resource on committees community organizations and services.
  • Continually seeks out improvement and promotes change.
  • Consistently keeps in confidence all matters related to personnel/Medical Center activities.
  • Oversees the establishment and maintenance of the SANE/SART record while ensuring chain of custody protocols for photographic slides.
  • Maintain membership in applicable professional organizations ie. IAFN APSAC etc.
  • Pursues ongoing professional growth opportunities.
  • Exhibits ability to analyze/interpret/calculate/forecast date evaluate plans comprehend/explain complex information and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Position responsibilities are inclusive of duties and responsibilities of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).
Diagnostic and Monitoring Role
Uses evaluation expertise to triage patient and determine if medical evaluation is needed before starting medical/forensic examination process.
Coordinate care by all agencies involved in assisting the sexual assault patient and coordinate referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up individualized for each patient.
 
Therapeutic Interventions/Provision of Care/Evidence Collection
Provides timely non-judgmental compassionate care to the victims of sexual assault.
Provide medical/forensic examination to alleged perpetrators.
Perform medical/legal SANE evaluation including a patient history head to toe assessment for trauma a detailed genital examination skilled forensic evidence collection documentation photographic and colposcopic photo documentation assess for mandatory reporting requirements reporting when appropriate detailed discharge instructions and expert or fact witness testimony.
Maintain evidence under chain of custody.
Administer appropriate prophylactic medications per standing orders to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
 
Clinical Management
Performs care interventions in accordance with the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
Deliver patient care based on current practice policies and standards.
Consults with ED physician as needed and at any time during the exam process should question of patient assessment/treatment occur.
Identifies and responds to potential risk/hazard to themselves and others.
Delegates care appropriately to other staff and maintain accountability as appropriate.
Commit to cover minimum number of shifts holiday coverage and other scheduling requirements as determined by the SANE program.
 
Documentation and Communication
Document and interpret detailed injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence.
Creates a climate for healing and recovery.
Recognizes the importance of the Medical Record as an avenue for multidisciplinary communication and completes documentation.
Supports effective communication through utilizing systems that enable opportunities for input regarding patient care issues.
 
Clinical Practice Improvement/Research/Education
  • Responsible to maintain clinical expertise as a SANE identifies learning needs and seeks experience to develop and maintain clinical skills.
  • Develops a clinical knowledge base for populations served that is age appropriate culturally specific and diagnosis appropriate.
  • Responsible for participation in ongoing program development by:
    • Attendance at monthly grand rounds meetings (75% attendance per year)
    • Attend/present in-services educational updates seminars etc.
    • Maintain professional memberships.
  • Maintain competency by active performance of cases with no lapse of greater than six months.
  • Participate in chart and photographic peer review process determined by the SANE program.
  • Identifies processes/issues for individual and team improvement.
  • Shares individual expertise with other members of the SANE Program.
  • Participates in interactions aimed at improving the quality of work life.
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition report to SANE office when equipment problems/failure occurs.

Exercise fiscal responsibility of unit’s resources.
Maintain Wesley Medical Center Allied Health status to be available for medical/legal evaluation on unstable patients that are not able to be transferred to Via Christi.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directly supervises employees hired for the Sexual Assault Program. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’ Degree in Nursing required with current RN license in Kansas. Minimum 3 years relevant clinical experience. Approved 40 hour SANE/SART course completion with preceptorship completion required with minimum of 2 years experience of completing SANE medical/forensic evaluations. SANE-A Certification. SANE-P Certification or willingness to complete within one year. Completion of approved death investigation course. Completion of Finding Words of Kansas course or willingness to complete
