SummaryThe Phlebotomist is a member of the Laboratory staff responsible for the timely and correct collection of patient specimens. These duties may include picking up samples and/or answering phones.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Accurately and consistently verifies and records identity of patient or donor.Assists in meeting turnaround time expectations of the lab and our customers.Assists with compliance of all Affiliated Medical Service Policies.Effectively uses computer system to find information (client test and patient.)Assists in correct handling and preparation of specimens for testing.Explains procedures to patients/residents and/or family members and is courteous and respectful to all.Interacts positively and communicates effectively with patients/residents lab staff and external customers.Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent patient/resident laboratory information to assure that patient/resident rights are protected.Maintains section in a state of readiness for inspection and certification.Monitors usage and inventory of supplies. Fills supply orders and unpacks incoming supplies.Participates in investigation and resolution of operational problems with team leader or manager.Promotes positive morale.Reports complaints and concerns to Manager as necessary.Reports customer complaints/concerns regarding quality and service to the manager as necessary.Performs DOT and non-DOT urine drug screen collections. Verifies and records identity of patient or donor accurately and consistently.Performs Breath Alcohol Testing after completion of training/certification.Prepares patient specimens for transport to lab appropriately making sure all requisitions and specimens are matched up and handled properly.Assembles equipment such as tourniquet needles and disposable containers for needles blood collection devices gauze and alcohol preps on phlebotomy tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.Collects specimens using appropriate methods and equipment ensures timely delivery to laboratory and demonstrates the knowledge competency and skills necessary to provide excellent care appropriate to the ages of the patients/residents served.Identifies patients and labels specimens correctly and legibly according to departmental policy.Performs off-site phlebotomy as needed.Transports specimens from draw site to the laboratory if necessary.Picks up specimens at client location as needed.Answers phone calls as necessary.MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIESThis job has no management responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Experience preferred.LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers clients and other employees of the organization.MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.REASONING ABILITYAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONSMust have valid Kansas drivers' license with fewer than 3 moving violation tickets in the last 4 years.
