Summary Statement: Applies extensive knowledge of principles, theories, concepts and industry practices and standards in materials and process engineering to evaluate technical and economic factors and recommend engineering and manufacturing actions for attainment of design objectives of processes or products in a manufacturing environment.
US CITIZENSHIP/PERMANENT RESIDENCY REQUIRED Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities: Develops solutions to a variety of complex problems requiring independent judgment and ingenuity to modify procedures and approaches related to applications of materials, equipment or processes in the manufacturing, rework and repair of aerospace products. May lead lesser experienced stakeholders. Reviews plans for new product and factors such as strength, weight, and cost to submit material selection recommendations ensuring attainment of design objectives. Confers with producers of materials such as metals, ceramics, or polymers during investigation and evaluation of materials suitable for specific product applications. Uses computer software and hardware to conduct tests on chemicals, materials, and processes. Plans and implements laboratory operations to develop material and fabrication procedures for new materials to fulfill product cost and performance standards. Determines conditions under which tests are to be conducted and sequences and phases of test operations. Directs and exercises control over operational, functional, and performance phases of tests. Resolves testing problems such as product or system malfunctions, incomplete test data and data interpretation. Reviews product failure data and interprets laboratory tests and analyses to establish or rule out material and process causes. Examines composite and metal material samples, components and parts using nondestructive and destructive inspection technology to detect delaminations, internal abnormalities, impurities and failure analysis of materials. Develops and writes technical specifications to control material properties and manufacturing or repair processes. Specifies procedures for cutting, shaping, and otherwise preparing the basic material considering product specifications, economic and producibility factors. Designs and plans layout for such processes as hardening, washing, laminating, etching, painting, plating and other like operations. Reviews and monitors the manufacturing process to control variables in the process such as temperature, laminations, density, viscosity, pressure and other like variables. Analyzes and interprets data and prepares technical reports for use by engineering and management personnel. Ancillary Functions and Responsibilities: Performs other duties as required. These duties may include assignments in job classifications other than the primary assignment. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: MATERIAL & PROCESS ENGINEER SENIOR Formal Education, Training, Professional Certification and Work Experience: Experience may be substituted for the formal education and training requirements in this section at the discretion of management. Technical Bachelor level degree from four-year college or university and six (6) plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Level of Supervision Required: The level of supervision required described here is representative of that which must be met by a Stakeholder to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Works under general direction. Guidance as to results expected and complex problem resolution. Exercises latitude in determining activities and approaches within moderate to wide parameters. Communication and Special Skills: Communicate effectively using electronic media and in written and verbal forms. Make telephone and direct personal contact with internal and external personnel and make formal presentations to small or large groups. Competent in the use of standard software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Professional Engineer Certificate preferred Special Training and Behavioral Competencies: The following training requirements and competencies must be met before acceding to this job.
