Job Summary Under regular direction and following established standard operating procedures and policies, performs basic tree services operations to include stump removal, tree pruning and trimming. Assists with the removal of trees on City property as well as fallen trees on roads and/or private property including the disposal of all debris. Responsible for the installation of the Citys holiday light displays as well as event street pole banners. Supports special events and other specialized activities. On call for tree emergencies and weather related events.
- Job Duties
Essential Functions Remove and Prune Trees: Assist with the setup and cleanup of each job site. Assist with ensuring job sites are safe and secure during tree operations to include providing traffic control. Operate chainsaws and various other tree maintenance equipment and tools to service trees including removing branches and performing stump removal. Assist with the removal of trees on City property and the disposal of all debris. Chip branches or load into dump truck after removal. Maintain equipment and perform preventative maintenance as required. 70%
Provide Storm Related Clean-up: Clean up tree debris caused by storm related events to include assisting in removing trees that have fallen from City property on to roads and/or private property. 15%
Special Projects: Assist with the installation and removal of street pole banners within the Central Business District in accordance with the Citys special event schedule. Assist with the set-up and clean-up of special events and with various City-related projects. Install the Citys holiday light displays and provide ongoing maintenance and replacement of lights within the trees along Main Street. 15%
Perform other duties as assigned.
- Qualifications
Job Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Over one year of experience in operating heavy equipment, tree care operations, or horticulture. Complete a chainsaw safety workshop and in-house flagger training within 3 months of hire.
Driver`s License Requirements Valid South Carolina Class D Driver`s License.
Performance Requirements Knowledge of: Safe equipment operating practices/procedures of tree care equipment and tools.
Ability to: Work cooperatively with others in order to achieve results including taking direction from other technicians regarding jobsite safety, setup, and cleanup. Properly prune, cut, load, and remove trees. Read basic communication. Write simple sentences. Perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Safely operate bucket trucks (non-CDL), pickup truck with a dump body, chainsaws, hand saws, front end loaders, backhoes, chains, hand tools, pole saws, skid steer, ditch witch, stump grinder, chipper, large sprayer, spider lift, and excavator.

Working Conditions Primary Work Location: Outdoors.
Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, safety vest, ear plugs or ear muffs, steel-toed boots, chainsaw chaps, gloves, seat belts, safety belts (harness), and hard hat.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards with the majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires hearing, vision, carrying, handling/grasping, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting, bending, standing, and walking. Frequently requires talking, crouching/stooping, and kneeling. Occasionally requires fine dexterity (e.g. tying and untying knots), climbing, crawling, balancing, sitting, and foot controls. Very heavy strength demands include exerting up to 20 pounds constantly, 20-50 pounds frequently, 50-100 pounds occasionally, and may require occasionally exerting 100-150 pounds with assistance from other staff or machinery.
Mental Demands: Constantly requires working in a noisy/distracting environment and working closely with others as part of a team. Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious or exacting work, emergency situations, and working an irregular schedule or overtime.
