Burke Corporation is a family-owned business with a 40-year history. Burke's history in the pizza industry began with Pronto Food Kitchens, a producer of frozen pizza for the retail grocery and tavern trade. In 1963, William Burke, Sr. was hired by Pronto Food Kitchens to manage operations in Ames at 906 South Duff Avenue. Today this facility serves as the second production site for Burke.
Just three years after he was hired, William Burke, Sr. purchased the company. Although frozen pizza manufacturing remained the primary product, the custom production of meat toppings began to grow. In 1974, Pronto Food Kitchens was renamed Burke Marketing Corporation and the frozen pizza line was sold. At first, William Burke, Sr. and his wife, Alice, were the Company's only two employees.
In 1984, the Company outgrew the Ames production plant and a larger facility in Nevada, Iowa was purchased to house the primary production line. Since then, Burke has made 20 building additions, including the most recent expansions to the freezer, the new employee break area, a warehouse which accommodates a new employee fitness center, and a 20,000 square foot office facility.
In 1991, William Burke, Jr. was appointed the Company's new president and has led Burke to further growth and success. While the pizza industry in general is growing at a 2% rate, Burke Corporation enjoys an annual growth rate of more than 10%.
